This antenna ROX! I have been using this antenna mounted about 15 feet high for a few weeks for my primary scanner antenna and it has blown my mind as to how well it receives. I currently live in Bakersville, NC, deep in the mountains of Western NC in an area where scanning is a very quiet hobby, usually. Since I have been using this antenna I have been able to listen to more active counties, such as Buncombe County where i am from, on the other side of some 5000 ft mountains. I hadn't really paid it much attention and thought the voices just sonded similar until I started actually paying attention to what was being said, and realized I was hearing first reposnders dispatched to places near where I used to live by dispatchers whos voices I recognize. This antenna rocks. before anyone says its a band opening, its not. I get the same quality of signals in the morning, noon and night, I get the Blue Ridge Parkway rangers well, I get several surrouding counties quite well, mostly the SD and EOC dispatches and several Fireground channels for the counties. Now for the shocker: About 70% of the channels I am picking up haven't graced the display in over 2 years since I moved away from the area where these signals originate. Today I tested several other antennas to see if they had the same results, i tried a discone, a 5/8 wave VHF antenna (most of what is out here is VHF) tried a Tram dual band amateur antenna (worked well for some but not all) and a multi-band dipole, the AS still picked up more signals (tested each antenna for 2 hours) better than the rest. I am using RG11 coax about 20 feet long coming own to the back of the scanner. the scanner has been modified to use a N connector in place of the BNC. anyway, just wanted to share my joy of how well this antenna works in my situation compared to other antennas. This thing really does do what AS claims it does.

The older version with the “micro choke” for 800MHz was a great mobile antenna and especially for VHF low band. The darn thing is around 4ft tall! There is a guy on Ebay with several new trunk mount versions for sale, item #160016452741. If you need a good all band mobile antenna with emphasis on VHF low band, you can’t beat this A/S series.

I wasn't impressed with the 4 band antenna, but there really isn't a lot of 800MHz systems in this part of the world to give it a good test. The one I have is the 25-50, 130-174 and 440-512 model and it works really well.

I have the base version of that antenna, with the mast mount plate and radial kit. I just took it apart and cleaned it, still in good shape after 6 or 7 years at my previous location. Putting it back up soon I hope.

Yes it works very well, I ran a sweep on it with a Site Master analyzer. Not bad for a scanner antenna. Very low SWR on 2m ham band, not bad on 430 to 460, and the biggest surprise was 800 to 860 was almost all under 2:1 swr except right at the high end.

I have it sitting on the floor in my 2nd floor shack and I can hear the ATIS at CHO airport 6 or 7 miles away. I'm not on any kind of hill here either.

Thanks...I searched Google and the AS antennas seem kinda scarce. I remember years ago when I was into radio, they were everywhere, and I considered them a really good antenna back in the day.

i always buy mine through a local comm shop. The ones I have in use now came from Asheville Communications nearly 10 years ago. I love my AS antennas, they have never given me a moments trouble that a good cleaning didnt fix (road salt conducts RF) and they have always performed exceptionally well. i got the idea to use AS products because I noticed several FDs and PDs in my area were using them. I have never bothered to try this antenna as a transmit antenna, but at least now i know that i can if I need to.

Thanks KT44HX...I went to the page, but I cant find any prices or ways to order. Any other hints?

Jim

Sorry about that Jim. I didn't even check for prices. At least Interpid came thru with one. You are correct, searching for A/S doesn't yield a lot of results. As KF4LNE said, comm shops are good, cause they can get a lot of things you might otherwise not know about. Good luck!

Where to Purchase

I found them at

www.theantennafarm.com

He has great prices on most everything he sells. I have just placed my first order with them so not sure about their service and all but I was very pleased with the help I got from them while on the phone ordering.

while i agree that that antenna is a pretty damn good performer <had/have multiple mobile one's>.i currently use one plunked to the baseboard heating element in my radio room.it does a fairly good job.i do remember year's ago someone dissected the micro choke portion and found nothing but a hollow plastic tube.supposedly the micro choke did nothing to enhance 800 mhz.reception.
