I think if my cessna was rolling and falling at a rapid rate, I'd be doing the same thing.

At first I thought it was a simulation because it seemed so over the top... They often do that in training to try and shake them up. But I guess not.

Holy Cow, My heart jumped when I started hearing that. He was so scared, I feel really bad for him, it can defenetly be scary when you enter clouds specially when you have no formal training and then add on top of that the whole spinning and tumbling feelings and thoughts and, man I can only imagine what he was going through.

Funny thing is this sounds like a promotional video to keep the FSS under government control, am I right? To bad that didn't happen.

Pretty wild. I have to say I would equate it to people being able to call me (911) in a car crash. The thing is there's lots more time to 'crash' in an aircraft. :D

The guy sounded pretty level-headed in the 3rd act of the clip when he was on the phone with the FSS. Just a poor SOB who isn't trained on IFR and found himself in IFR conditions, out of control.

what did he call in on? 121.500?...and then was patched into 118.15?...
Wow that was some scary stuff!!

I think he just had "Flight Service" dialed up then after FS coordinated he dialed up the Center...I think it was somewhere out west...not sure though.

If you really want to hear a true example of people staying calm in an emergency listen to the ATC recording of United 232, the DC-10 the crashed in Sioux City Iowa. These guys remain so calm and were even cracking jokes at some times even with the loss of all hydrolics onboard and only controlling by engine power, truely amazing. I have the recording if people want it, I'll post it.

I don't think there is ANY need for ANY pilot to ever talk like that. If he can't control himself, he shouldn't be a pilot. By screaming like that, he's making the situation a hundred times worse.

Yeah, maybe I can't always live up to my own expectations, but my goal in life, in whatever I'm doing, is to handle anything unusual with calm, quick reasoning, or reflexes if appropriate. To do that it takes studying and practice - at whatever it is.

Hello Friends:

That was real bad, in the begining I got a little freak-out but then it
sounded like a training exercise to me. The other guy in the radio was very calm.

That was a great story..I did a paper in (Accident/Investigation) college on it once. In fact, I think they tried to put it down on a closed runway and ended up in a cornfield at the intersection. They had to scramble to get fire/rescue inplace was the main concern from what I remember.

Yeah Al Haines(Captain) made the comment about being specific to a runway which I thought was really funny when I heard the tapes. Also yes they did end up lining up on a closed runway. The emergency equipment was all staged on the closed runway and they had to get them moved before the plane came in. I went to a FAA lecture where Al Haines gave his "Luck" speech. If you ever hear he is going to be around your area and giving a lecture, it is worth spending any money or time to see. It's a very very well done lecture.

If he ever comes to the DC Metro area...I'm signing up. Thanks for the lead.
