I’m headed up to Pinetop this Friday through Monday. Plan to sit on the deck, watch the lake, and keep a Yaesu FT-65 nearby. Any tips for local frequencies to monitor?

Almost all public service is conventional analog so your FT65 should be able to get fire, Sheriff, local PD. The data base should be accurate. If you want some amateur radio frequencies try the greens peak repeater. 147.31 PL 110.9. You should be able to hear it up there. You will be able to pick up southern fire districts it includes Pinetop. You should be in range of Showlow, County Sheriff, Probably State PD on 460.300 I 40 and south. You can also try some of the forest services state and local. They are not very active but you may be able to hear something. Enjoy your stay.

That sentence should be revised to say, you should be able to hear the U.S. Forest Service, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and possibly the Coconino National Forest and maybe the Tonto National Forest depending on your location. You might be able to hear the Petrified National Park. Make sure to add the three regional (USFS Region 3) tactical frequencies. That is all I can think of as far as federal agencies. The State of Arizona's Dept. of Forestry and Fire Management has repeaters in the northeast portion of the state, at least on Green's Peak. You should program the state's game and fish statewide frequency. You should also program the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. They have a fish and game department. They have a general frequency for all functions and a fire management only frequency as well. Local fire departments as a must as well. I hope this additional information will help. This is all covered in the database.
