MOFFAT COUNTY - A small plane crashed Friday afternoon northwest of Craig, killing the two men who were aboard.
The crash was reported by oilfield workers in Sweetwater County, Wyo. who witnessed the wreck.
Debris from the crash was spread over a two-mile area in the northern part of Moffat County. The bodies of the two victims were found three quarters of a mile apart.
A positive identification of the bodies has not been made.
The plane was a single-engine fixed-wing aircraft, equipped with a prototype parachute system. However, it is unknown whether the pilot activated the parachute or if it deployed upon impact, officials said.
High winds carried the section of the plane to which the parachute was attached into a remote part of Wyoming. Officials were unable to reach that part of the plane.
Inclement weather at the time of the crash may have played a role in the crash, as high winds, extreme rain and some hail and snow were reported, officials said.
The plane was flying from Oakland, California to Lincoln, Nebraska. The last flight plan filed was from Fairfield, Utah to Cherokee Wyoming.
The crash site is near Moffat County Road 10N, and officials from Moffat County and Sweetwater County were both on hand.
The National Transportation Safety Board was notified and began its investigation on Saturday.
