I have only met one other person who knew about these types of things. I used to get tickled when security would strip a cell without a physician's order. I would ask them, "how is this cell safe?" Most of the time, other offenders would supply the razor blades to them. I have witnessed what a fingernail can do to flesh as well.

Yes, I do miss working in prison, but not the managed care folks. They ruined treatment with profit margins.

Yes, we have very similar, but different experiences. I have not even discussed dealing with the worst of the worst behavior problems, working in ID. Folks really don't know what goes on inside those facilities. Lesch Nyhan Syndrome, Prader Willis Syndrome and even Fragile X Syndrome were not uncommon. It is no wonder that our professional library kept a March of Dimes book for reference.

I am ending with this. Dealing with ID within the community can get someone with low IQ shot or put in prison.

Our current governor used to be the state Attorney General. One day, I got a call from him asking about a female when I was working at the ID unit near me. I told him that she functioned in the severe range, not moderate. How in the name of God did the DA let someone this low to enter prison? I told him. "You already have access to her medical chart. Please, review the intellectual and adaptive behavior test results. Or, if you want to see for yourself, just hand her a book and ask her to read. Or, give her a handful of money and see if she can combine coins. I told him she would likely be able to identify several coins.

She was with her much higher functioning boyfriend who killed someone. She was with him. I think he was tricking her out. She was charged with murder.

To his credit, Greg Abbott whisked her off of that unit and they put her in a proper environment, not prison. Most offenders will exploit them. This is why Texas has separate facilities for those with substandard intelligence.

But, when MH/ID are combined, it can be a difficult encounter for law enforcement.
