• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

So if one does not travel around with thier scanner is it better to get a base model scanner? I am trying to decide between the radio shack pro-96 and the bc796D. I know that radio shack (uniden) is coming out with the 2096 and I am wondering if I should wait for that one. Are there pro's and con's to a base or a mobile one other than one can be carried around easier? They both come with a computer interface I am assuming.

It really boils down to what do YOU want it to do. :)

If think you might end up running around a lot and would like to have your scanner with you .. handheld is the way to go.

If you are gonna sit at home and scan .. base station.

I had the same decision to make a couple of months ago and went with the BC796D. It's mounted in my car. I am happy with my choice...a buddy of mine has the BC250D and the audio quality on my base is better.

Ah, the age-old conundrum! I have a pile of scanners, but I primairly use two 796D's - one mounted in my truck, and one in the house. I enjoy the better audio and display of the base models, so it was an easy choice for me. (FWIW, I've had scanners mounted in my vehicles, year-round, for the last 10 years. Outside of getting one stolen, never had a problem with them, including temperature extremes).

Now, I do have a 250D that I use sometimes, such as when I was at the beach last weekend, and could use it in the hotel room, or strolling down the boardwalk with the Mrs. Also, when I occaisonally drive the wife's car, the 250D rests perfectly in the cupholder which pops out of the dash above the AM/FM.

As Crayon said, it's really up to you, and how you're going to use the scanner. Best of luck!
