Possible Interesting NYPD Updates

Every so often I troll through the recent new FCC licenses for the NYPD. Many times it is just a rehash of the currently known frequencies in a new location or the addition of bandwidth information (20K FM to 11K NFM, voice to data, etc). In going over some recently issued licenses, I noticed some interesting things.

The NYMAC channels are now listed as a whole group in various locations around the perimeter of the city and not a boro-specific frequency plus CW.
This was the known list (updates from those in-the-know are welcome):

Lastly, the following list of MDT frequencies has been out since the late 90s, but I am not sure if they are still used with the proliferation of the city EMWIN system with smartphones, tablets and laptops in the cars. This list shows what areas were covered by a particular frequency, but some are now being listed for locations far from their previous area. Also notice the interesting grouping of two frequencies right next to each other and the areas that they cover that would suggest overlapping coverage for some of them.

The wideband NYMAC channels haven't been assigned to specific boroughs in quite some time. They are now simply numbered 1-6 and are available throughout the city, as well as in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties.

They have designated 3+3 as primary/secondary for both NYPD as well as Nassau/Suffolk.

NYMAC 4, 5, 6 are primary for Nassau/Suffolk, secondary for NYPD

Westchester is also part of the system now, having access to NYMAC 2.

NYMAC 1 is monitored 24/7 by the NYPD dispatchers, and is therefore assigned as the "call in" channel.

Whatever those two SI channels (482.3875 and 482.5375) may have been at one time, they are no longer valid.

And? Plenty of frequencies are licensed in perpetuity even though they may not actually be in use. Or not used for the purposes you believe.

Keep in mind that the T-Band spectrum is technically frozen, and therefore it makes more sense to continue to license already licensed frequencies than to remove them, risking losing them forever.

In any event, I am looking at the very latest revision of the NYC Urban Area Tactical Interoperable Communications Plan (TICP), which very clearly lays out the six NYMAC channels and makes absolutely no mention anywhere of 482.3875 or 482.5375. You asked for updates from those in-the-know, and that is precisely what you have received.

They don't use them.

And they probably won't even use them at the next WTC-like incident either, until, or at least, after the dust settles.

The worst thing you can do is to start having cops or firemen during the cloud of war, so to speak, start changing radio channels. Especially channels that the average boss, much less officer, knows little, if anything, about.

Go to YouTube and listen to some of the yelling and screaming that went on during 9/11 on the radios. Now, in you mind, consider how compliant those cops would have been to some announcement by the dispatcher saying, "All units switch to NYMAC 2....."

Never happen.
