Try again. Figuring the scanner cost $200 (I think it actually cost more, but we'll use $200 as a nice round number) plus 16 crystals @ $5 apiece = $280.
$280 in 1974 dollars equals $1164.14 in 2005 dollars.
I got the figures for inflation here.

Mark S.

So you respond to my post one day, see no response from me, then pick out another part and respond again the next day. I guess I better reply now. :)

OK Mark, assuming that inflation calculator is accurate, then fine. So $280 = $1164 of (roughly) today's dollars. Now, where are you going to find something that can listen to the Secret Service's communications for $1164?

Please remember that below where I was talking about inflation in my initial post, I made a point. If I was wrong about the inflation scale then that is my ignorance and that was nice of you to help me out with that link of yours. My point still stands though. :)

Yep, those doughnuts will do it every time! Did they confiscate them for further eaxmination?

Mark S.

Not sure. I hope they gave the dog one after he found them. Then again, the Secret Service may not let their well trained dogs eat food from strangers. Maybe they made an exception, or maybe they confiscated them for themselves. :)

No, I just waited until I had facts in hand to address that part, rather than make an incorrect statement.

I have read in various places that agents sometimes fail to actyivate their encryption, so part of a series of transmissions will be in the clear. Gotta listen first, though.

How can your point about inflation stiil stand if your evidence was incorrect?

Anyway, your original post was a cheap shot at anybody bothering to listen to their scanners during Bush's visit:
Whatcha gonna hear besides local units blocking of streets and such and maybe some cops that are sweating their butts off doing perimiter security?
I admit that Stillwater isn't a big city like Bixby, and doesn't have the sophisticated infrastructure that Bixby has, but I have found by listening to all available communications I am able to put together a pretty interesting picture of activities occuring here, even if I can't hear it all.

But that's us old farts, I guess. I wasn't born yesterday, I have the patience to take all the various little puzzle pieces and assemble them into a pretty comprehensive picture, even if a few pieces are missing. That's what I did when I worked for the newspaper, that's what I did when I worked for the police department, and that's what I do now as a hobby. Still works pretty well, for me anyway.

Adios!
Mark
