Now we are seeing the price of DMR amatuer handhelds in the $100 price range. What is restricting scanners that can monitor trunked systems (p25 for example) from coming down? Is it the hardware and processors price that prevents the prices for falling? You would think technology would allow for a Whistler quality scanner at a much lower price by now.

So much stronger hardware is needed and that would be the primary reason, correct? basically it is a much stronger/faster "computer?"

LOL

The $100 DMR radios do not do trunking.

And they cannot scan at 80 channels per second.

And a lot of the cost of the digital trunking scanners is the licensing for P25, DMR, Provoice, etc., rather than chips and diodes.

Scanner prices have been dropping, but don't expect anything major unless Baofeng or TYT start making scanners that compete with Uniden and Whistler on features and build quality.

Multiple licenses for formats fast processor and many other things. Scanners are actually pretty complex and do so much more than basic radios on many levels. But there is drawbacks as they are not designed to be perfect on any single mode or frequency which commercial radios are
