Some good explanation of all that here:

Easier to Read Pro-106/197/PSR500/600 Digital Scanner Manual

i have read that about 10 times or more and it makes it sorta easer but makes my head hurt when you get into the more of the deeper programing stages just saying .

You shouldn't try to memorize it or understand it. Just follow the steps given to program your scanner when you have it in your hands.

..and you may consider programming the scanner with software and purchasing the appropriate cable.

Believe me, it makes it MUCH easier. There is a ton of info on this site/forum on programming and software and downloading from their database. Take advantage of it and do it that way.

I've been scanning for decades. I would NOT have programmed a digital scanner by hand, one way, or another. It will take forever...

the 106 is a 'control channel' only radio. all you need do is program the CC and the talk groups associated with the CCs. some will advocate learning how to do it by hand so you *know* how to do it but i take the other viewpoint and use the ARC500 Pro software. i download the data i need from RadioReference right into the software and then into the radio. it's a snap.

What he said ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I use Win500, NOT because it's better or worse, but just because that's what I chose to do.

Again, a myriad of possibilities, but, at the end of the day, software makes things more amenable. Plus, you can focus more on listening than programming.

But, to each his own. Either way, you'll get help here.

precisely. i didn't mean to imply that ARC500 is the finest thing since sliced bread but it is what i'm comfy with and it gets the job done for me. the important thing is to spend time enjoying your radio and hobby and for me and a lot of others that doesn't include struggling to enter a complex trunked system by hand into the radio.

good luck and enjoy.

Ditto Here!
I tried to program it by hand and found this to difficult so I used Win-500 instead.
