Well I went and did it, bought a new 164. I've had the itch and came across this forum and that's all I needed. It appears times have changed with scanner technology. It appears that you can bu software to programe the channels in groups? I think this is going to be harder than I thought. If I'm not mistaking the young man at the store mentioned something about programing.....must have been the usb cable and software?

I hope it's easier than it looks, thanks again for the reply. Looks like a great winter hobby. Could have used it the past few weekends. Seemed like every weekend here in the Will County,Illinois something was going on. Once again thank you

Fortunately, GA
Win97 is the software, RS part# 20-047 is the USB cable for the programming. If you are running XP or Vista, you do not need to run the driver software. Enjoy your 164, I have a 163.

The USB cable is the one mentioned above. There are three options for programming software that I'm aware of.

Win97 from http://www.starrsoft.com
Arc300 from http://www.butel.nl
and PSREdit300 from http://www.psredit.com

They all have a free trial period, so try them and see which on you like best. The software isn't absolutely necessary to program the scanner, but it helps save time, especially if you use the RadioReference import feature.

Once you get used to the software, you'll wonder how you ever did without it. I use the software on all my scanners.
