I have a Pro-197 that I had rebanded and programmed by someone that I can no longer reach. The issue is that ever since I got the scanner back it's had trouble with the receive. Signal breaks up and poor reception. I notice that I can hear the same transmissions on my handheld Pro-106 which was rebanded and programmed with the same stations. Now all of a sudden the 197 isn't receiving anything at all, except that I can hit the WX button and it will receive it. Anyone have any ideas or should I send it to scanner master and have them redo it? Thanks in advance!

P.S. How hard is it and what all do I need to learn how to do the reband and programming myself and is there any idiot proof instruction on how too?

Any chance that the 197 was programmed with the wrong system or sites? Baytown shows to be on the TxWARN P25 system, using P25 Phase I talkgroups, which your scanner can handle. Rebanding in and of itself is not an issue, since the P25 system has the required bandplan in the data stream.

What antenna are you using for your Pro-197? If an external (roof top) antenna is connected, the scanner could be overloading from other transmit sites, or possibly simulcast distortion. What antenna is your Pro-106 using?

If you have the programming cable (or willing to buy one), then pick one of the three software packages at the link Troy provided. Use the cable and the software (they all have a thirty day free trial) to download the programming from each scanner, then compare the settings. How is the Pro-106 programming (for the system of interest) entered as compared with the settings in the Pro-197. I suspect that unless the antennas used are completely different (as in causing the 197 to overload), that you'll find one or more errors in the way the Pro-197 is set as compared to your Pro-106.

Thanks for the quick replies! Sorry I haven't replied back as quick, but I was thrown a surprise birthday party and was kidnapped for awhile...lol!!

Steve, I'm not having any issues with the 106, but it was programmed by someone different than the 197. It's the 197 that just all of a sudden not picking up the Baytown. Although, it does catch Liberty County still, even though it's a weak signal due to distance. It's just that Baytown just stopped on the 197. Wish I was up to date on all this new digital programming and the older I get the harder it is to learn...lol!

As for the antennas, they are both using the factory antennas that came with each unit. The 106 has no problems, but I've been told that handheld scanners have a more sensitive receiver on them. I'm dead center of Baytown and should receive them easily.

Check to see if the control channels have changed on the system(s)/site(s) you are monitoring. The 106 might have alternate control channels programed along with the primary control channels and the 197 might not have the alternate control channels programmed. If the system/site in question has shifted to an alternate control channel and the 197 does not have the alternates programmed, it could be your issue. This difference in the two radios performance might have happened since two different people programmed the radios.

I had one of the sites on the MPSCS in Michigan temporarily shift to an alternate control channel a while back and I lost the traffic from that site because I only programmed the primary control channel. I have the control channels and all alternates programed in my radios now to avoid this issue.

Sunnydog1, I've never fooled with any of this and not sure how to go about it. I do have a cable to do it though.

Do you have ARC500? If so download your scanner to your pc and save it. Just to make sure you don’t lose anything during the update. Now click on the link I sent and download cpu 2.1 firmware & dsp1.4 and follow the on screen instruction. If you don’t mind before you do the update power off the scanner and hold 3 down and turn it back on and tell me what you see.

Sunnydog1, it's crazy! About 3 hours ago the scanner came alive! it's receiving everything fine now. I don't understand it.

Aren't the 197 & 106 the same programming wise ?
Maybe program the 197 from the 106.

Just a thought
