My 197 scans VHF/UHF. It works so I am not updating anything.

Probably not due to its age, and no support for it anymore.

Well if it ain't broke...eh or why not just read up on the improvements with each FW version in wiki linked below to determine if it's worth it for you

i seen that - it doesnt have data on 1.6 1.7 or 1.8 on the CPU or 1.3 on the DSP side

It has 1.8...

CPU 1.8 fixes​

• Adds patch support for P25, Motorola and EDACS trunking
• Changes CCDump type string to "EDn" if "narrow invert" is turned on
• Corrects LCD “mirror image” issue

I have CPU v2.1 and DSP v1.4 on my PRO-106 and PRO-197. No problem updating them.
