How about a car battery? I built a power distribution box that connects to my Astron power supply with big clips. When the power goes out I unclip the leads from the power supply and hook them up to a Deep cycle marine battery. I have never tested how long it would go before completly dying, but I have gone about 36 hours with just a scanner and my 706 on in recieve mode.

I use a 12v gel cell, the type found in emergency lighting.
A 7 amp hour last around 8 -12 hours depending on the use
of the display light. It is what I use when the commerical power
goes out.

You can usually find someone selling them at most hamfests for
a decent price ($ 5 -$10 good) (above $10 - depends on their
condition) Keep a small multimeter with you to test for charge.
Another source could be had if you know someone in the building
maintenance trade. Those batteries have to swapped out for new
ones every so often. Maybe they can save the older ones for you.

I charge them with 500 mA walwart.

This set up also works for my BC780XLT.

Portable 12 Volt Battery

Something like the Auto Jump Start battery backs are good options and they also have other purposes as well. Check this link for an example.

If you like the gel cel idea, buy a UPS Battery Backup (usually sold as a computer battery backup). You can charge the battery in the backup and open the battery compartment for access to the 12 volt gel cell to power any 12 volt DC device.

The safest way (especially if you're not comfortable wiring your own battery, charger etc.)
is a "jump start" pack as mentioned, or even some smaller ones that are meant for non-boost
usage. I keep a small one (about 4Ah) and a "booster" (15Ah) for various purposes.
They can also have other features (built-in lamp, 3/6/9v regulated outputs etc.).

One comment on gel-cell charging from a wall-wart. It's better to use a regulated charger,
unless it's one built into one of these packs.
