I would agree with what both

@wtp said. Looking at the VHF AM mod, I believe it forces everything the scanner does into AM. It would be safe to assume that modding it to use FM every time would force the entire thing into FM. That being said, I get sat pirates pretty easily on my BC125AT. Prices are fairly affordable for the 125 as well.
My 2052's are still going strong scanning civil air, mil air, ham and rail though. It is a strong machine for what it is capable of. I'd repurpose the 2052 to it's strengths. It does have the ability to be computer controlled/logged both through Scan Control and ID Tracker. I've been working away at a script that reads the serial data and either renames the vox recording or changes metadata to be compatible with the likes of Rdio Scanner and Trunking Recorder.
