GreatLakes, so I am understanding that you are using the serial cable on a normal serial port?
Or are you using the 20-047 USB cable that I said I was using?

DickH, yes that is the error. The USB cable device does have LEDs on it for TX and RX ... the TX blinks once ... meaning it sent some data
to the scanner, but nothing comes back on the RX LED ... so it seems that whatever it sent was not understood by the scanner.

Yes, I am using the light gray DB9 RS232 serial cable that Radio Shack discontinued, CAT No 20-289. The same cable that is used with the PRO-96/PRO-2096. The computer has an actual DB9 RS232 serial port. I'm running WinXP Pro, with all MS Updates current. I didn't have to configure, or change anything. I just hooked it up, and it worked.

Radio Shack no longer shows this cable on their web site, but several of my local Radio Shack stores still have inventory, at a discount.

Well, I prefer to stay away from standard serial ports anyways. Since the USB port clearly works with other software and the 20-047 cable, the problem is not with the scanner or the port.

We should probably move this discussion back to the software forum area, since this thread was about opinions on the 433 itself. As I've said before I like the radio very much so far, but I have not been exposed to a lot of scanners like most of you folks here. After I get more experience on this unit, I may upgrade in about a year to something that does have the alpha tags and digital trunking though. I'm in the Tucson area and there's not a lot of digital trunking yet, but I was surprised to hear that the small town north of me, Marana is going that way ... so things *are* changing ;)

But for the money ($149 - $15 instant discount = $134 in store) I think the 433 is well worth it as a starter rig for a newbie like me.

Scan on!

How did you get a $15 instant discount? I was only aware of the $20.00 off sale price of $149.99.

I was hemming and hawing about doing the extended service, and the salesperson said "would it make a difference if I knocked off $15 from the price of the radio?" I said ok, and he pulled out a discount ticket(?) about the size and shape of a CD and punched in a code from it. But he did explain (and it shows on the receipt) that it was a discount off the price of the radio itself, not the 2 year extended plan I opted for, so I suspect one could get it with a bit of haggling if one knew it existed ;)

Push and hold the trunk button about two seconds, it will beep and you will have ID Scan, do it again to go back to ID Search..
