Hello all, I have a pro 651 that I cannot get to pick up anything. I haven’t really messed with it in a couple of years, but I know I have reset it, global reset it (I think that’s the name), a got the cable to go in the pc/if port and did that software reboot/reinstall that I saw on here. Like I said it’s been a couple years, but I remember trying everything I could come across. Speaker works, I can hear it cracking when I turn up the volume. I get nothing moving the squelch, doesn’t register any transmissions. I don’t even think it scans. I remember on some of the hard resets I would get one of the local weather frequencies to come in, but as soon as I took it off that, nothing, and going back to the weather frequency was silent. Is there anything else anyone knows to try before I trash it? Thanks.

Do you get static from the speaker or just crackling? Have you tried headphones?

Has the scanner been dropped or suffered a fall? Sometimes internal connections just need to be reseated. Before I'd junk it I'd open it up and take a look inside, try seeing if any connections look loose. Even if they don't look it, try pushing them together. It's happened to me before.

BTW don't junk it, sell it as-is. 25 bucks is better than nothing

Broken antenna connector? That's reported more often than you might think...a lot of people mishandle that duckie connection thinking it's well reinforced, when in fact it's not

When you access the weather frequencies, do you hear RF noise when you open the squelch? If you hear just hear noise, it is probably a broken solder connection from the antenna connector to the circuit board. That is a very common problem with that particular series of scanners (PSR-500, Pro-106, Pro-651, and WS1040). If you do not hear RF noise with open squelch on weather, you may have a different problem.

Yes, I have tried multiple antennas with no change. On the weather channel, I get absolutely nothing changing the squelch, won’t scan, no sound. On the two frequencies I have programmed manually, I will get the S for signal pop up for a second upon closing the squelch, but that’s it.

Do you hear anything using headphones or earpiece. If the contacts on the headphone jack are dirty, it can mute the speaker.

No I get nothing with headphones. I have tried lightly dismantling it in the past just to see if anything visible was going on, but didn’t see or mess with anything

And further, yes I believe my mom said it has been knocked down by the cat at least a couple times. I took it apart, and just tried tightening somethings. I now have key beeps through the speaker and headphones, which I didn’t have before. But still no squelch when open. Still doesn’t seem to scan.

When it got knocked over by the cat, did it fall on the floor? If it hit a hard surface, It may have cracked the circuit board. Make sure that all of the plugs inside the scanner are firmly seated. If the cat put any undue stress on the antenna, it could have broken the solder connection from the antenna connector to the circuit board. If you do not hear RF noise with the squelch open on an analog frequency without CTCSS or DCS tones, such as weather, you have a problem other than the antenna connection.

Make sure all of the plugs are tight before your try this. There is a possibility that the scanner firmware has been corrupted. Save the attached zipped file to your computer and extract. Turn off the scanner. While holding the PGM button, turn on the scanner. That will place scanner in CPU Update Mode. Connect the scanner to your computer and run the extracted program.
