Pro-82 (20-315) Comp Programing

I bought the programing wire for the pro-82 scanner but it will not show on my computer.

Serial Connector <--> mono connector

The guy at radioshack said it was the right one and the manual says i can program from my computer.

Any ideas?

what software are ya using, 2nd) I do not think any s/w suppports Importing from RR. however ya can copy & paste

Im using prolink but when it searches for scanners it wont find mine.

not sure if it is RR compatible but i know all the frequencies i want.

Did you set up the scanner model and com port number in the Properties section of RadioLink Modules in Prolink? Make sure the com port number you choose in Prolink matches the port you are physically attaching the cord to.

How Do you tell if it worked because prolink finally showed a status bar when i put upload all to scanner but i cant tell if it worked

You tell it worked by seeing the frequencies from the software show up on the scanner.

That last picture makes it look like the frequency for channel 101 did not make the trip – unless you cleared the channel while you were in the PGM mode after the transfer.

Did you get the message “End” and “FiniSh” on the scanner at the end of the transfer?

Did you check Device manager on your computer to see that Com 1 is the right port? Often Com1 will be the telephone modem.

I don&#8217;t think you are using the right cable. The Pro-82 manual specifies the Programming Kit Cat no. 20-048 That kit contains software and a cable that has a stereo connector.

The cable as sold separate from the Kit was Cat no. 20-049.I have one. It has a stereo connector and the back of the package says it is for the Pro-82 (and several other scanners).

You can also use the newer usb cable Cat. 20-047 if you have a usb port on your computer. Use it without the adapter cable.

you could have had this entire thing programmed 20 minutes after you bought it if you were to do it by hand..... its only a pro 82.....
and then you'd have the knowledge to change/add something while your out scanning

Sure it is easy to program by hand but learning to do it with software will also build skills, experience, and tools that can be used later with other scanners. And software is handy to have ready to use even for scanners such as the Pro-82 if you want to change a lot of frequencies back and forth such as when traveling to different areas.

and then you'd have the knowledge to change/add something while your out scanning

i do know how im just re-entering all the frequencies in a more organized manner so i figured id give it a try

the usb one actually dosnt work at all it says on the packaging unless youy know somthing i dont haha

i got absolutly nothing more than "wired" when i attempeted to transfer

But i supposidly have the wrong cable so i will give that a try

Mr Roberto, I will ad my 2 cents worth. I have worked for Radio Shack for a while now and have
programmed many of these Pro-82 / Pro-2018 RS(GRE) Scanners. The first thing that struck me
in your writing ... was you mentioning that you just purchased "a serial" programming cable at Radio Shack.
What I find super odd, is that BOTH versions of the serial programming cable have been discontinued for some time now and are no longer sold. The only cable currently being sold is the new USB programming cable ( 20-047 ) which I understand WILL NOT work will the Pro-82 and Pro-2018 models.
Then I see in your picture a white/gray colored cable, which was the color of the old 20-289 Serial (Bi-Directional/2-way) cable with the MONO plug and WILL NOT work either with your scanner and has not been sold in almost 2 years. The way way OLDER ( 20-048) Serial 1-way ( load only ) black colored cable with the stereo plug will work with the ScanCat software. This 20-048 cable has been history and off the deck at Radio Shack for probably 4 years or better now. Note: That I would EASILY see an RS Employee, seeing as most RS stores no longer have any Pro-82 and or Pro-2018 scanners left, would gladly sell you CHEAP their old "store-used" (20-048 Black Serial to stereo connector type programming cable as " Other Store Income " .... ( I would see this relic fetching a between $1 to $5 max ) ......................................

I have to agree that to hand program it would be easy or at least lQQk on eBay or RR for this older ( 20-048 ) programming cable for sale , etc. ?

btw ~ I see you have your sights on the Pro-106 ... I made the move in a snap last Christmas when
it went way down to $299 on sale. I love it and I use Software for RadioShack PRO-series (PRO-92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 99, 163, 164, 106, 197) and GRE PSR-series (PSR-500, 600, 300, 400) scanners WIN500 software and the (20-047) USB programming type cable which is required. Just wait until you check out all the features

Firefox, I was wrong in thinking that you could use the 20-047 cable directly on the Pro-82. I am pretty sure that it can be made to work by making a simple conversion cable. (I will describe it at another time if you are interested in trying it.)

I actually bought a 20-049 cable at my local Radio Shack store a couple of months ago for 97 cents but that was a fluke. You will need to look for them on the used market.

You can very easily make a a cable similar to the 20-049/20-048 from junk parts or fairly cheaply from purchased parts.

All you need is a D9 female serial connector and a 1/8 inch stereo plug plus wire to connect pin 3 of the D9 to the ring section of the plug, and pin 5 of the D9 to the shield section of the plug.

In case you don&#8217;t know, the sections of a stereo plug, starting at the tip, are: tip - ring - shield.

You could get the D9 from an old mouse or from an old serial cable (such as was used on external telephone modems). Or you could buy one such as this
9-Position Female Solder D-Sub Connector

You could use a stereo plug and wire from an old earphone set, or from a stereo connector wire. If you have to you could buy the stereo plug or a cable with a stereo plug(s) attached.

We have people on here that want to program a 106 or 96 or other super-sophisticated trunking scanner using the keypad instead of getting a cable, software, and premium subscription, but here we have a simple non-trunking scanner that is wanted to be programmed using software and cable and not the keypad. Hilarious.

If organization of freqs is what is wanted, why not use an EXCEL spreadsheet, one could be constructed to record the entered frequencies.

If you would read my post I am not mocking firefox42692 about his equipment, just remarking that this is a paradox in that people try to program later model trunking scanners via keypad and here we have an older model scanner wanting to be programmed by the software/cable method. To the contrary, I applaud firefox42692 efforts to do this and wish him every success.
