I just bought a PRO-94 scanner that supposedly has the weather alert function built into it. I followed the instructions and set it to alert, but during today's storms the radio never sounded.

I guess my question is this. Does this particular radio sound the weather alert when in normal scan mode, or do you have to have it set to the weather frequency within its "search mode" where you set the alert?

Hope this makes some sense! :D

You must have the right FIPS codes in your scanner, and have it set to SAME alert mode,.. during scanning, it should kick in if it recieves the 1050 Hz tone with the SAME code. I know mine did when I owned one. If your too far from the Tower, then you may not get the accurate SAME code,.... But during severe weather its a good idea to not only have a SAME capable scanner, but also a dedicated NOAA weather radio.

Does it work when your trunking? It has never worked for me. I will recheck, which begs the question, where do you get the FIPS code?

When trunking,... NO,.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I have an old 94, so I am usually trunking 90% of the time, since I can't do both like with the later version.

The original 94 was a PITA, the A version was much better,..
The B version I am unsure if it will do SAME while trunking or not...

pro 94

I currently own a pro 94..and was just the other night trying to figure out the weather alert. When searching you can hold down the ALT or data key for about 3 seconds and it will put it into test mode. It will go through a sequence of beeps. And you will see L1-L2-L3... when My scanner went off I was just in standard search mode durring a storm. But It did start beeping when I had the alert function set on. You will not hear the repeated weather alert as if you were just searching the WX bands. On this specific scanner you can not enter a fips code. It is supposed to pick it up automaticly... Atleast thats what I gatherd through reading the manuel... If anyone knowes if you can enter a fips code and how to do it please post.

Mr. Head

I think your correct. I have had a 94 for a long time, and have considered the alert useless. I am trunking the majority of the time, and the alert will not work. Also the FIPS? is worthless.

All 94's will do FIPS codes for the SAME alert function,.. and will give you the code/level of the alert... you then have to switch over to WX function to hear the actual alert. The 94, and 94 A will not do SAME while trunking, the B I am not sure about.
