Hi. I am trying to find out if there is a pc cable for my pro-96 that can hook to my laptop. My laptop does not have a serial cable connection, just USB. I have a pc cable for my desktop, which has a serial cable connection, but I have not seen a USB. Please help. I also want to see if the WIN96 software for my pro-96 will work on both my desktop and laptop with just 1 key. I want to pay the $30.00 and use it on both computers. Is that possible? Thanks guys. John

John you will need to get a USB to serial cable which will have a 9 pin terminal for plugging into the regular cable. Radio Shack has them as does most computer outlet stores.

As far as using the program on both computers, that's up to Don Starr, the author - but I don't think he'd have any objection, as long as you weren't programming 2 scanners at the same time. Maybe not even then. Don?

Interesting the price for it down there in the States. Seems expensive for us up here compared to the Canadian stores. I would have to pay Radio Shack about $46.00 Cnd. for that cable at the Shack.

Here is basically the same cable up here in Canda Canadian Funds of course, but notice the big difference in prices. First is the Source by Circut City and the next is Future Shop Canada

Source cable

Future Shop USB Cable

As for the Win 96 key, i agree with the previous poster. It should not be a problem. You purchased the Key for the program and should be able to use the same key for as many computers you own. Why would you not?

Hi folks - I just got a R.S. Pro 97 - and got the pc programming cable - however, - I am in search of the program for the software. Any Ideas where to go search? The software that I was Directed to, states that it doesn't work with the R.S. cable.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

In this case do shoot the messenger.

The software is written to connect to a serial port. In Windows, the serial ports are virtual - the software doesn't connect to actual hardware ports, it connects to software drivers for those ports. The driver for a USB converter (like the R. S. cable) looks, to the software, just like any other serial port. (I know - I write software that uses serial ports, and it can't tell whether the port is a "real serial" port or a USB converter.)

If you were directed to software that really doesn't work on USB ports, you were directed to the wrong software. As fmon said, use Win97 - you won't be sorry. Download it, try it, and you'll probably agree that it's worth the price. Then pay for it. If you don't like it, all you've lost is a few minutes or hours playing with it.
