• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a classic Cobra 29 CB. I have it all plugged into my truck and the antenna on my roof. However, I can transmit fine on it with people talking back but I can not receive anything on the CB itself. I know people get my transmissions because my friend also has a CB and can hear my fine. I have turned the squelch completely off and all the noise reducers off and yet I can still hear nothing come back over the radio. I hear a little bit of static but no communication even though on my friends we are hearing me talk and others talk. To even get static on my CB I have to turn the RF gain all the way up and then I can hear a good amount of static but still no transmissions from other people.

Anyone know what is going on here or how to fix it?

I was told it could possibly be my antenna.

Thanks,

JonL

When you say classic Cobra 29, is that the model name or are you talking about a really really old "classic" cobra 29? Some of the cobras, the older ones will not receive if one of the mic wires is broken. The receive will cut in and out if you wiggle the cord at the mic plug. It's the same as if you unplug the mic while listening. Good luck.

Can you hear better with the truck off? You may have some RFI coming from your vehicle/engine that could potentially block out all but the strongest signals.

You should hear static with the squelch all the way down, even with no antenna.
I bet you have a bad microphone connection. Most likely the Receive wire on PIN 4.

Remove the mic from the radio.
Take a flathead screwdriver and touch it between pin 1 and 4.
See image: http://eriecb.com/images/4pslr.jpg

This will put the radio into receive mode. If you dont hear static, then its another problem, but bad mic connections are a common problem from the cords being stretched and pulled on. The wires break or come loose. It probably needs to be soldered back on.

Have you tried using an external speaker. The built in speakers on CB's go out a lot, I alway use an external, should be a plug on the back of the unit, one for PA and another for ext spk. The static you hear may not be from the rec gain, just the static from a blown speaker. Also Cobra 29s have meter gauge's on the front, if the you are getting needle swings when someone answers then it is not the radio or mic, but the speaker for sure. No needle swing then the radio's internal circuits are the problem.
