To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just curious ..

In the programmer software there is an option in the 'Digital Voice Options' to change the key length. (either 8 or 16). My version is defaulted to 8 and is disabled, so I cant change it. It says Prism models (I have an LPE scan model) cannot accept 16. I dont think this is the case ?

Can someone help me out on this one ?

Thanks in advance
(PM me if you can as I dont check the forum too often )

generally speaking, if it's greyed-out in the software, then that version of software or RADIO doesn't support it.

I dont think this is the case ..

This is directly what it states in the help file:

This control defines the size in bytes of the encryption keys for the personality. By default, this control is set to eight bytes, which allows up to 8 different banks per personality. If this control is set to sixteen (16) bytes, the maximum number of banks per personality will be 4 banks.

NOTE:

Prism radio types and JAGUAR 700P radio types do not support a key size of "16 Bytes". ProGrammer will default to a value of "8 Bytes" and access to the control is denied.

Radio Specific

Default Value: 8 Bytes
This Control Applies To: Prism HP/LPE-200, ProVoice
JAGUAR 700P, JAGUAR 700P,M-RK, Orion

Any help would be appreciated ..

i just sent this to your email too but thought the public might be intrested

your pers looks fine now that i go back and look at what you are trying to do you have already answered your own question in your post
"NOTE

PRISM radio types and JAGUAR 700P/Pi Series and P7100 Series (P7170-System and P7150-Scan) radio types do not support a key size of "16 Bytes". ProGrammer will default to a value of "8 Bytes" and access to the control is denied."

the key that you have in your keyloader what is it for? your local ploice ems fire stuff like that? it is posible that what you have is a key for the mobil radio for they are all i know that can be loaded with 16bit if you change your pers to a orion or a m7100 you will see that this option is now permitted
i hope that helps

Digital Voice Options

So if I understand correctly the portable radios (LPE's, Jaguars) will accept a key length of 8, while the mobiles will accept a length of 16.

If this is the case then a mobile unit couldnt talk to a portable .. as the key wouldnt be the same. I know where I live the public services use Orions and LPE200's. In order to talk to each other the Orions must be set for a key length of 8. (This is of course for encrypted communications) Wouldnt this compromise security somewhat using a shorter key length ?

Just trying to grasp all the digital capabilities of the radios. It is starting to make more sense.

It is something that I dont think I will figure out as well I dont have a whats required to make this work. I am looking to learn as much as I can as I want to change careers to work in a radio shop. But looks like I may have to take a course on this stuff but they are too restrictive for me to take one now.

Thanks for the replies ...
