just curious how UNIDEN HomePatrol, BCD536hp, and BCD996xt scanners handle encrypted signals. wondering if they transmit "dead air" or ignore transmissions all together.( way too much time on my hands) Stay warm my friends

They will skip over and ignore the encrypted frequencies or talkgroups as if their was never any traffic on them in the first place.

Incorrect. The scanner will display the TG and MUTE the audio, and display enc for them if you have them programmed in. If you DL a system via Sentinel, it will not add them in your scanner unless you force it to. For Conventional Analog Encrypted it usually will mute the audio, though sometimes you may get an second or so of encrypted garble.

That is how it works on the BCD396/996T/XT, and BCD436/536HP.

Actually, it depends on the system type. The scanner will display ENC and mute audio for encrypted P25 Phase I and some types of encrypted DMR. But with P25 Phase II and other types of encrypted DMR, the scanner will behave as it is playing normal audio, but you will hear garbled noise.

And there is no such thing as "Conventional Analog Encrypted". Encryption requires digital of some sort. You can scramble an analog signal (typically frequency inversion), but that is not encryption.

There are reasons why you are getting different answers.....

There is no consistent answer - it depends on the system.

Some encrypted channels/talkgroups may be completely suppressed and you'll never know they are active.

Sometimes, some of these "suppressed" channels/talkgroups may be seen/heard in a brief (< 1 sec) burst just as they are being suppressed.

Other systems (P25 Phase 2) don't suppress the encrypted talkgroups at all and, as has been stated, you will just hear digital noise/gibberish for the duration of the transmission.

With more and more services being encrypted. being able to turn off the auto mute would be useful to help find additional channels on a system.

On motorola type 2 with p25, I do hear a slight bit of garble with enc. If you use Proscan , you can log tg, and radio id which is good for tracking purposes.

(using any tool possible).....you can log tg, and radio id which is good for tracking purposes.

...which is the only way (apparently) the database admins will allow the talkgroups to be posted in the database (determine and provide the user set).

Uniden radios make it difficult if not impossible for most users to aid in this effort.

Gentlemen, thank you for your quick response..... interesting reading
My new Whistler TRX-1 will land on a encrypted TG and emits a DTMF telephone busy signal. Then it lands on a simucasted network that's encrypted and the TG will be silent but I've had EMT standing close by and heard his radio transmit what mine would not so . . . But that busy signal was real funny when 1st heard. [emoji23]
