I'm wondering which scanners out there can be programmed to display a name vs just the frequency? Instead of displaying 154.xxx it would say County fire for example. What little I have looked it seems that most just display the frequency.

Alpha tags

What you are asking about is commonly referred to as "alpha tags". You should browse the Wiki section here on RR and look under Radio Models and you'll find lots of scanners with this ability. Because of the sheer number of characters you need to program into a scanner with this feature, I strongly suggest you program it with computer software (unless you're only programming a dozen or so channels).

Here are some scanners to check out: PSR-600 (digital), PSR-400 (analog), PSR-500 (digital), PSR-300 (analog), PRO-197 (digital), PRO-163 (analog), PRO-2055 (older analog), PRO-106 (digital), PRO-164 (analog), PRO-97 (older analog).

And some other scanners not made by GRE/Radio Shack to check out that gmclam conveniently left off his list for some reason:

BCD396XT - The RadioReference Wiki
BCT15X - The RadioReference Wiki

What are your guys thoughts on the BCT15X?

Great scanner as long as you don't need digital capability. :)

Check out the Uniden forum for other reviews on the 15X.
