To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey all, Im trying to program a Baofeng DM32 for a local volunteer firefighter so he can talk to fire dispatch when he is called out. Is it possible to program the radio to transmit on our local repeater without the software? The repeater's alpha tag is MODOC BARN, located in Modoc County California. If anyone could help me program the radio without the software, id really appreciate it!

Yes, definitely advisable against operating a BOWELfeng or any CCR for that matter for life safety operations. Your friend should speak to whoever programs his department's radios to get it done right
Again, he is a volunteer and doesn’t have a department radio. Very rural and underfunded county. I’m just trying to help him out.

A Motorola used DMR radio that will work in the Fire Service can be bought on Ebay with charger battery and speaker mic for $200 is your friends life worth that to him? On the Department I was on for 40 Years you used a Commercial Radio or none at all no options or questions ask. The Baofeng gets wet and locks up the channel and everyone else has no communications things burn and people get hurt.
Much less the new NFPA Standards for Fire Service Radios.

Again, if you read my previous reply, it’s going to stay in his truck. It’s not going with him outside of his truck or into a burning building. You guys are insufferable. Lol

Ummm...you've noticed.

It's seems common on social media for people to answer questions that weren't asked while not answering the question that was asked. You'll also see a fair amount of dead horse beating online.

If you had just said "Is it possible to program the radio to transmit on our local repeater without the software?", you might have gotten an answer.

Five replies to your question and nobody directly answered your question.

And, folks wonder why us moderators get grumpy. ;)

We'll start from scratch in case you are not sure how to enter a frequency from the get-go. I'll assume that you are on firmware v01.02.046.
Have he DM32 set to one of the VFO's (a or b)
Type in the receive frequency of 153.92000 (this is what the RR database shows for MODOC BARN)
As long that radio accepts the frequency, you are ready to proceed to the next steps:
Push the menu button, and select settings
move the cursor to "channel settings"
Select #3: VFO Save to CH
Once you have done this, change the radio from VFO to channel memory mode. Select up the channel you just saved.
Bring up the channel settings menu again.
Select #2 "TX Frequency" and enter the repeater input frequency (I don't know what that is so you or your friend will need to find out).
When that is entered, follow the same process to select "CTC/DCS" and then "RX/TX CTS/DCS". Enter the PL (or CTCSS) for the repeater.
Make sure the channel is set for ANA or analog mode. If not, go back into settings and select "Channel Type". This is where you select analog or digital mode. Obviously select analog.
Make sure to select "OK" every time a selection is changed.

Once you have the TX, RX, and CTS set, you should be good to go. You'll just need to look up the specifics for the repeater input and PL setting.

I hope this helps you.

Randy

PS: The others are just trying to help by warning that using a very inexpensive radio for 1st responder critical communications environment is not a good idea. But based on your comments about it just being a basic way to keep in touch, then it is understandable. The radio is not type accepted to be used for this type of communication (as long as he knows that).

I'm trying to see if I can program analog ham repeaters in VFO Mode. I was able to download a codeplug from my local DMR Group (DMRVA.org), but it has no analog channels for me to use a template in CPS programming. This codeplug is divided into so many zones, so my question is as follows:
If I start in VFO and then save to a channel, will the radio essentially stay on that channel, or is there some default zone that the channel automatically goes to--and which I need to switch to--once I return to channel memory mode?
I sure wish that the CPS would simply include a field for desired Zone # on the channel list. I want to do my codeplug in Excel, but looks like the only thing I can do is upload a raw channel list--if i'm lucky!

ps - does anyone have a codeplug they use with analog ham repeaters that they could share for use as a template? I downloaded a GMRS channel codeplug, but that's for listen-only with no CTCSS or DCS. I don't mind if it's a big mixture. I think I'd learn much better than I can from the pure DMR codeplug I'm using.
