Sounds as if you have the serial programming cable (has a DB9 on one end) and your laptop does not have a Serial Port, just USB. If this is the case you will need a USB-> Serial adapter. These can be had from almost any electronic/computer store (Best Buy, Circuit City, RS, etc.) just make sure the it comes with the necessary drivers and I suggest you don't opt for the cheapest one you can find.

I would go with the Radio Shack USB cable. It has the USB to serial converter built in.

Mine works very well, although there is some fiddling to be done on initial setup. It is head and shoulders above a separate converter.

The problem with that solution is that it only works for programming the RS radios. He already has a programming cable, why not spend the money on a more generic use cable? And why would it be "head and sholders" a better solution?

The only scanner he mentioned was a Radio Shack scanner.

My experience with USB to serial converters is that they tend to have quirks. Sending someone to Radio Shack to get a 200-0047 beats the heck out of sending him into Circuit City to get "A converter that will work with my other cable."

It cuts out one level of possible conflict ... and there are plenty of those.

Nah man ...no problem.....install the USB driver , connect the cable , go look and see under device manager which com port it put it as and go to your software and put that com port....you're off to see the wizard.....oh and if need be make sure you have the same Baud Rate for the software and the com port.....

Yep, figuring out the driver software is pretty easy. To figure out the com port you can either go to the device manager or try them all until you find the one that works.

From then on it is pretty smooth running.
