To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am fairly new to programming and need some help.
I’m currently having trouble upgrading my Motorola XTL 2500 radio using ASTRO 25 CPS. After successfully getting the radio into bootloader mode, I attempted to perform a flash upgrade. However, I ran into several errors, including "Failed to open the port", "Open Radio Failed" (Error Context: 25, Status: c0000343), and "Failed to download bootcode". I’ve double-checked the USB connection and confirmed that the correct flashcode and FLASHkey are being used, but communication still fails. I’ve also tried power cycling the radio and using different USB ports and cables, but the problem persists. Is anyone familiar with these errors or have any suggestions on troubleshooting this issue?

The flashcode I need to upgrade to upgrade to is 509008-000480-1. The original code plug says the radio is at 409008-002000-1. I have a new code plug file with the new flashcode. I basically did a read on this code plug from the old radio and I am trying to write it into a new one I got. I tried to use the clone wizard with no luck. Then I tried to flash the radio and also got some errors. I have a good code plug it just trying to write this to the radio. I also have a flash key so I know that should not be the problem. I attached a few snips of the errors I am getting.

If anyone have some ideas I am all ears. I could really use the help.

Thanks,
Hunter

That's a NEXTEL rebanded XTL2500 and is very limited on what it can do to it. A regular XTL2500 is an M21URM9PW1AN.

Probably easier to toss the radio in a trash can and get another. They are abundant online for next to nothing. Ive tossed hundreds in dumpsters so far.
But if you persist to try this, I'd suggest rear USB cable on 26pin. The error above tells me the incorrect flashkey is in the radio. Normally one would flash the radio, then try to write a codeplug. Flash would have been ordered with a "before" flashcode and new flashcode. Is it for this flashcode thats in the radio ? Do you have a proper cvn file loaded as well ?

I don't believe there are any FCC allocated channel for any private citizen to use as non-trunked channels. Trunk channels will require the system administrator to give you permission and the system key to be on the system. Private citizens have no business to use an 800 Meg radio unless it is an SMR 800 Meg system and with thd permission of that system owner. As stated, chuck the radio in the trash.

The OP asked for help with flashing a radio not a lecture about 800MHz allocation

FWIW, there are a few gov agencies out there with conventional 800 licenses. Who said anything about the OP using these radios for personal use or on a trunking system?

I am aware of what he asked. Are you in charge now, no you're not in charge so move on?

If he has permission from the licensee, he will need to have formal permission pursuant to Part 90 rules and regs? Does he have that? If not, he'll need to chuck the radio in the appropriate receptacle because he won't be legally using the radio.

I am with a police department. I am the nerdy radio guy trying to replace a few radios. I do have the states permission to use the trunked system.

You won't be able to do what you are doing with the Rebanding XTL2500's that you have. Those are locked to 256 modes and analog/legacy 3600 baud trunking that were provided to agencies that had low memory Astro Spectra's and LCS2000's that couldn't do the new NPSPAC bandplan. Also, they will not do 700 MHZ or P25 until the model # I noted earlier changes from #2 to #1 and you can't change that with the standard software.

You would be better off sending them back to the seller, if you can, and finding XTL5000's that have P25 in the flash that are identical in size and you can drag/drop the archive codeplug between the two.

If that is true, then have the system admisistrator program your radio, but I dout they will do that.
