To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi.

I've been trying to program Motorola XTS 3000 using CPS R05.02.00 - when I click "read radio" button, XTS goes into programming mode showing "1 CSQ" on the screen. After few seconds radio restarts again showing "SERVICE", and CPS says "Communication with radio failed".

Now here is the interesting part - when I try to read radio codeplug using Wookie Mobius Lab the process actually completes successfully - the codeplug is a total mess (of course), however I think it proves that the RIB, and the programming cable does work.

Does the radio have a questionable past? If not, then I'd be with b7spectra in that it was probably programmed with a newer version. If it does have a questionable past, then all bets are off.

With the XTS 5000 you will get a message saying the version of your older CPS is not compatible with the newer version used for programming, call motorola to upgrade.

I can't recall if the XTS 3000 series give the same message or not.

Basically all the Motorola CPS will..it will say something like "Codeplug Too New For This Application"

It turns out, that it wasn't problem of too new codeplug. I just had to use older computer (Pentium IV 3GHz, 512MB RAM, Windows XP Pro) to program the radio.
Thanks for your help.

Aquaz, Have you or do you have a 2nd serial port to try on your computer?

Also make sure you are using a new battery in your RIB and or the power supply for the RIB is working 100%.
Plus use a fully charged XTS battery as well.

What kind of RIB and cable are you using?
If its giving you the 1CSQ its starting the read process. If the radio is rebooting in the Service mode then the cable might not be set up right. The device should reboot normally.
Try to have the radio on, then power it off and then back on and see if it turns on in Service mode again. IF so then you need a different cable.

I had a similar problem with a GE MRK..One computer I could read the radio and I would go and write to it, it would basically tell me to go eff my self, tried the same radio on another computer and it worked fine.

It has to do with your port settings, When I had "USB to Serial" coverter, I couldn't read the radio so I started messing around settings in the hardware profile and the " 1 CSQ" came up. IIRC I had Flow control set to Xon/Xoff which caused it. I ended up buying a PCMCIA Serial card for the laptop. Until it arrived I used a desktop with a CAT cable long enough to reach my truck (50ft) for my MCS.
