To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an nx-200 that I want to program the keypad lock to also lock the channel selector knob. I can not find anywhere in the options to make the selector knob also lock when keypad lock is enabled. I've searched the programmer help with no luck either. I know this radio is capable of doing this because the previous nx-200 did this when I locked the keypad. Unfortunately I don't have an archive of the previous radio to compare it to..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It should just do it. I'm running NX-410s and they use the same KPG-111 programming software. I've got keypad lock set up on all 350 hand helds and they all lock the channel selector knob. In fact, the only functions that should work when in lock mode is PTT, Volume, on/off and the lock/unlock key.

I'm not aware of anyplace in the software where you can choose what gets locked and what doesn't.

It must be a software programmable feature because several of the radios are like that. There are others that work as you say, but the newer batch all lock the screen only. Very aggravating.

If anyone runs across the same issue I figured it out. The 16 zone/channel checkbox on the "Key Assignment" - "General" tab must be unchecked.

That option is just supposed to control the "rollover" function of the selector knob. With it enabled, it will only select 16 of the channel/group ID's. Supposed to be used with the mechanical stop on the knob. Unselecting it will let you roll over past 16 channels/GID's.

Interesting that it's affecting the "key lock" function.

2.80 is an old version of software, so maybe it's been changed in newer versions. I've got a few more radios on the way I need to program. I'll have to give that a try and see how it performs in the 4.72 version.

I'm a new user to kenwood software, been using Motorola and MA/Com for 20 years. Any reason I should update to a newer version, or is it all about the same? I guess you don't get the dreaded "software too new or too old for this radio" message. That's nice anyway.

If it's working for you, stick with it. The later versions do away with wide band FM on some frequencies. If you need to have wideband, you would have to buy a "W License" from Kenwood.

The newer versions of firmware/software mostly included upgrades to the NexEdge trunking, support for -G model radios with internal GPS, and a few other minor tweaks.

If you ever purchase a radio with newer firmware, you'll need to update, though. The software and radio firmware are loosely coupled, but so far it hasn't been a 1:1 thing. Some older versions of software work with newer firmwares.
