I didnt
there was a free trial
You used your free trial some time ago, so to continue with ProScan, you would need to purchase a license key.
You can always go the butel route, I love the ARC product line
loading the ARC software may get you another free trial period (if you never loaded it before), but after it’s 30 day trial expires, you’ll have to either purchase it, or resign yourself to using only FreeSCAN if you don’t want to pay licensing fees for ARC or ProScan. You don’t get multiple free trials’ with any software that has a licensing fee..

FreeSCAN is workable for the 396XT, and is still free, though no longer supported by its author. It can also be used for the P2 series scanners, but does not correctly program DMR, and no support at all for NXDN. Of course that does not matter for the 396XT as neither of those digital formats can be handled by the XT series scanners.

Years ago I used proscan to program my uniden 396xt
I need to update it but Proscan wants $50
there was a free trial
Free trial is only for 30 days as is described on the website. Pay the $50.00 and get two activations plus periodic app updates. I've been a happy Proscan user since 2012. Best Uniden software out there by far!1740014286540.png

There is Butel ARC XT, but it is also payware ($40) and doesn't cover as many models or have as many features.

There was a free program named Freescan but I think it has been unsupported for a long while now..10 years? It is available on Github

I don't use it so do your own due dilligence

I purchased Proscan and have been happy with it. Also consider Proscan covers more Uniden models so if you ever upgrade you can keep using the same software.

AFAIK there is only one free option and that is FreeScan. I think it works for the model you mentioned but not positive.
It does, FreeScan doesn't support the x36HPs, HomePatrols nor SDSx00s. They offer "experimental" support for the 325/996P2. OP's 396XT should work fine, though my Proscan recommendation still applies, it offers so much more

any other reliable options?
If you want "reliable options" then ProScan is the software that you want. Bob of @ProScan is a top-notch guy, frequents the forums here, helps us out when we don't know the answer, and his ProScan software is unbelievably fantastic. The ProScan software does so much more than any other software and Bob is so generous in his time spent with us and is constantly improving ProScan that the $50 cost is certainly worth it. In reality, I would not hesitate to say that the $50 cost for a lifetime license and free updates for life is nothing less than a bargain that you should not pass up. As you have seen in this thread, many folks use ProScan and totally believe that it is the best. You just can't ask for any more than this.
