Almost 2,000 more new trunked mobile radios will be provided to volunteer emergency responders by the fall of 2024, improving their ability to communicate as they help Nova Scotians in times of need.

The new equipment will go to more than 300 volunteer fire departments, ground search and rescue teams and other organizations. The radios will be encrypted, which addresses a recommendation from the Mass Casualty Commission Final Report that all emergency response agencies should have access to encrypted radios.

A further move to keep Nova Scotians and tax payers in the dark and avoiding transparency. It's more about hiding the long response times for ambulances and other services from the public.
Had the "Alert" system been used a lot of confusion and near misses could have been avoided. We have "unhoused" people living in tents but, they'll spends millions for new radios.
Governments needs to get priorities in order.

Glad I never went with the SDS100... Seems to be less and less out there we can hear on a trunking system. Eventually everybody will be encrypted even taxi dispatches. :(

NS DNR are now encrypted. As per the Mass Shooting Inquiry recommendations. EMO/Fire will be completed by end of year.
According to NS Public Safety Communication Facebook page.
That's unfortunate. Being in Public Safety I understand the reasoning behind it. Should agencies have access to secure comm's? Absolutely. Should normal ops be secure? Probably not... but I won't derail the conversation complaining about encryption.

Will be interesting to see if there will be a push for PEI and NB to follow suit. Seems everything in NFLD is secure from the get-go.

FYI everyone,

Encryption discussion is permitted. It is when you negatively discuss on-line scanner streaming and encryption together that it is discouraged as it insults the Radioreference owner's other business enterprise, Broadcastify.

Just be courteous in your replies and stay off the moderation radar.

Anyone hear anything on Dept of Public Works talkgroups or new talkgroups? They are changing the radios in the Western district this week. We got new radios today and they changed some of the talkgroups.

As per the recommendations of the Mass Shooting Inquiry. The province is replacing the existing TMR2 fire service radios with new encrypted radios. The Public Safety Field Communication folks have a Facebook page additional info may be there.

New changes to NS Provincial fire fleetmap has been posted. All are encrypted except the training talkgroups. I'm told the cutover date is Friday, November 22, 2024.

Changes include:
  • addition of a Central Region, which I'm told is HRM. Unknown if this includes HRFE.
  • VFD Interop channels for MFR, EMO, and RCMP are now encrypted also
  • each dispatch group now has 10 Ops channels allocated, for a total of 100
  • 10 new provincewide secure Tac channels (mutual aid). These are in addition to the 12 regular (clear) mutual aid channels.
  • 4 new Atlantic secure channels (systemwide). These are in addition to the 4 common channels.
See changes: Maritime Public Safety Radio Network (MPSRN) Trunking System, Provincewide, Multi-State

Will Transit Ops be in the clear ?
I'm sure they'll likely stay in the clear. As of writing this the only agencies I know of that are going encrypted are DNR (complete) and Fire/EMO which will be in November.

Can't help but think they've given that lunatic his final victory .

IMO Allowing terrorism to disrupt life in Nova Scotia is a mistake. I agree some aspects of Public Safety requires the privacy of encryption.
But, not total. There are many first responders that monitor communications for tactical up-dates and situational awareness,
they'll lose a available tool when this comes to pass. The events 4 years ago were meant to victimize as many as possible,
as stated one final victory.

A greater concern is that when someone controls what you know and when you know it, dictatorships can grow. IMO

Please leave politics out of the discussion. There are other places on the internet for that besides a radio discussion forum.

Encryption discussion is welcome here, but keep it thoughtful and reasonable, and not with controversial opinions. Your first and last lines ruin an otherwise good post . . . IMO

It is my understanding that in the very near future all fire department TMR traffic will switch to encryption and this includes HRM and CBRM. I think this means that only paging will be in the clear. There will be very little left in the clear on TMR.
