I feel like I'm overlooking something simple but can't figure out how or if I should do this.

I use my PSR-500 as a portable and a temporary base at my desk. I always use NiMH (Powerex) AA's in my radio and charge them with my Maha charger. When I'm sitting at my desk, I use the AC power to run the radio for long periods of time but I take the battery pack out because I don't like charging the batteries in the radio.

Anyways, is it possible to use the Alkaline battery case, put my NiMH cells in there and plug the radio into the AC adapter in an effort to not allow the radio to charge the batteries?

Is this a trick question? That is about the only way to prevent the charging in the radio. Note the extra contact on the yellow battery holder? The black one is the one you should use. You knew that right? Or did I misunderstand the question?

I put a small piece of tape over the extra contact on my yellow holder, now I use it as an extra 'magazine' of batteries and it doesn't matter what I leave in it when it's plugged in.

I had set the charge time to zero in the menu but I could swear that the radio got slightly warm with the yellow holder in it, as if it was still charging the batteries.

When the scanners shut off, it always charges the batteries (slightly, I dunno if it charges with a weaker "maintenance" current or what the deal is, but it definitely keeps charging).

Using your alkaline (black) mag is your only guaranteed way to know the batteries aren't being zapped.

Aside from not using batteries, lol.
