I'd find that odd [or not] - Sensitivty on the PSR-500/600 is better than that of the sensitivity on any Uniden or RS scanner that I have ever used, hands down.

Wiith that said, if you have strong transmitters local to you that are transmitting on the same band that you are listening on [i.e. you are listening on VHF and there is a local paging transmitter, FM radio transmitter or weather station or something] then you may be suffering from strong signal overload.

Try listening to that particular agency with your ATTenuator ON. If you can hear it better with your attenuator on, then you have one or more strong local signal sources on that band that are overloading your receiver. This is common with PSRs, especially on VHF and 800 Mhz.

The scanner is very sensitive though.

my 300 is like that... not as Sensitive as my pro-97 was... with or with out the ATT on ...

I have had just the opposite. My PSR-300 pick's up comms my Pro-97 never did. My Pro-197, mobile cousin to the PSR-500 work's great as well. Both use R/S 800 antennas.

PSR500 & PRO96 side by side same ant (RS 800 duck) and the 96 will pickup some things the 500 don't. And then the 500 will pickup things the 96 don't get. But most of the time thay pickup the same this is on P25 digital 800Mhz.
155Mhz both pickup the same.
800Mhz trunk NOT digital both pickup the same.

You could be having the same issues I've been having with mine. I bought mine in Jan of last year. Initially it was leaving any other scanner in the dust in terms of sensitivity, esp 800MHz. By late March, it was acting like the attenuator was on constantly. Opened a ticket with GRE and they checked it out, said it was bad and sent me a replacement. Now, however, the replacement is starting to go downhill as well. Just opened a ticket with GRE yesterday, so we'll see what they do with it now. I checked the antenna screw issue, it was tight, I can't check the solder between the antenna feed and the PCB since it's under the shield, but I suspect that is the culprit.
Have you opened a support ticket with GRE yet?
