LITTLETON, Colo -- A motorcyclist fleeing from the state patrol died Tuesday afternoon when he ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle, troopers said.

The crash occurred just after 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Simms Street and Bowles Avenue.

The Colorado State Patrol said after a high-speed chase, the motorcycle blew through a red light and struck a white SUV making a left hand turn.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. The state patrol did not say if the driver of the SUV was injured.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area because of closures and delays.

thedenverchannel.com has an interesting slideshow of the intersection after the crash ... rather gruesome looking.
WM was dispatched originally on the crash to a possible DOA which they promptly announced a "field pronounce" upon arrival. The tower unit stated that the crash was due to a pursuit.

WM was again dispatched around 1800 to "wash down the intersection".

FLEEING SUSPECT INVOLVED IN FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH

On April 29, 2008 at approximately 2:31pm, a trooper attempted to stop a
1993 Yamaha motorcycle for speeding on Highway 285 near Kipling. As the trooper accelerated to catch up with the vehicle, the motorcycle exited on to southbound Simms. The trooper lost sight of the motorcycle for a period of time regaining visual contact near the intersection of Simms and Belleview.

After regaining sight of the suspect, the trooper activated his emergency lights in an attempt to make a routine traffic stop. When the vehicle failed to respond, the trooper then activated his siren. At that time the suspect accelerated rapidly in an attempt to flee from the trooper. The suspect continued southbound on Simms before entering the intersection with W. Bowles Ave. on a red light colliding with a white Chevy Suburban. The Suburban was lawfully in the intersection attempting to turn left from Bowles to northbound Simms.

The suspect was the only occupant on the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the adult, male rider is not being released at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

There were no injuries to the occupants of the Suburban.

The trooper was driving a fully marked, Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

The crash investigation has been turned over to a multi-jurisdictional crash investigation team comprised of law enforcement agencies from throughout Jefferson and Gilpin counties. The crash is still under investigation at this time.

It was later discovered that the license plate on the motorcycle did not match the vehicle. Further details surrounding this crash will be released as they become available.
