I have one old transistor radio with an RF stage and the DX-286 far outshines it. The hottest radio/antenna combos I have right now are:

- The Qodosen with the Terk AM Advantage. It allow direct wired connection of the Advantage to the AM receiver in the Qodosen.

- The CCrane EP-Pro -- CCRadio - EP PRO AM FM Portable Analog DSP + Twin Coil Antenna Inside -- it also allows direct wired connector of the Terk AM Advantage. The EP-PRO has a very hot AM receiver and is a lot of fun; it does not have a digital readout. You can read my review of the EP-PRO here: Sometimes simple works . . . really well! Exploring the CCrane EP PRO Also here: The Great Gonzo Radio Experiment

- My old Grundig Satellit 800 (not really portable; it's "luggable" but will run off batteries) connected to an MFJ 1886 amplified loop. This is the best performer. For best performance, the 1886 ought to be mounted in such a way that it can be rotated. Mine is not.

Hope this helps.
I have the Terk Advantage, so that would work with the male to male cord. Just trying to weigh the Qodosen with the Terk vs EP-Pro, with or without Terk. The Qodosen has the superior FM. When using the preamp, is the Qodosen equal to or better than the Crane? I like the idea of having everything in one unit, but if the Qodosen is really worth it, I'd consider it.
