Ok I just landed myself a part time job with a local computer shop and i was able to switch out my AMD Sempron Processor 3400+ 2Ghz for a AMD Athlon64 3700 Processor from a PC that did not work anymore that the boss helped me with and i just wanted to know from someone elses POV, Is this a smart move that i switched the processors? my desktop works fine and nothing seems to be wrong but seems a little bit faster but i thought it had to do something with the system Bios.

My OS is a 32bit and I didnt know if i have to upgrade to a 64Bit OS "Windows 7"

I have a compaq presario SR1710NX and i pulled the Athlon Process from an HP a1600n.

Is that ok if it still works or do i need to do some type of update on my bios?

sorry if im not making any sense or im running on.

If it is working don't sweat it, but use your spare time to search the net and do some sleuthing about your Mobo and precessor(s), etc and anything else--that will make you a better employee; and lead to further exploits, and always know you will screw things up badly at times but most things can be fixed and all is good if you learned something in the process---

as far as your 64 bit ? goes.... i need to know what board you have before i will say, yes it will support 64Bit operation.

look here: AMD Processors for Desktops: AMD Phenom

CPU is 64 bit, but is your board 64 bit capable? also how much mem will it support as a max? this is the key thing we need to know

No, you don't have to upgrade Windows... Just because its a 64 bit capable proc. doesn't mean you have to upgrade. It will handle both 32 and 64 bit OS's. The quirk in this is the amount of RAM you can use. In a 32 bit OS your looking at a maximum of 3.5 GB that can be addressed. RAM drives might see more than 3.5 GB. So a pagefile could be throne in the RAM that isn't addressed... I think.

This depends on your MOBO. We need that info.

a 32 bit system can address 3.22 GB Of RAM. yes a 64 bit system will run a 32 bit environment, but you wont have the capability of addressing all of your RAM if more than 3.22 GB exists. RAM Drives are dependent on the hardware of the RAM Drive.

you would be better off just throwing in the max of your board memory wise, getting a new Windows 7 64 Bit Home premium version, which BTW is becoming the standard now. you wont regret the performance increase you will see with more mem and a better environment

speaking of boards, what board are you running so i can lookup your boards specs?

actually wait, you gave us the model # of your system soo i found it......

Hardware
Base processor
Sempron (P) 3400+ 2.0 GHz

*
1600 MT/s (mega transfers/second)
*
Socket 939

Chipset
ATI Radeon Xpress 200
Motherboard

*
Manufacturer: Asus
*
Motherboard Name: A8AE-LE
*
HP/Compaq motherboard name: AmberineM-GL6E

Memory
Component Attributes
Memory Installed 256 MB (1 x 256)
Maximum allowed 4 GB* (4 x 1 GB) requires the replacement of the installed 256 MB DIMM

*Actual available memory may be less
Speed supported PC3200 MB/sec
Type 184 pin, DDR SDRAM
DIMM slots Four
Open DIMM slots Three

your running DDR 400 (PC3200) with a maximum allowed of 4GB. you can run Win7 64 Bit Home Premium just fine

i had a HP running this mem from A-DATA on a HP 763n.

grab two sets of that, and you have 4 Sticks 1GB each totalling 4GB

and wow look at this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754

Win7 64Bit Home Premium OEM for 99$

you have your tech support here, so you dont need to pay for retail version of Win7

I hope this helps you make a good decision!! Cappy-Andrew

I think he might have some issues running 64-bit since that system has a 32-bit board in it. I don't think it will access the 64-bit registers properly when installing a 64-bit OS such as Win 7. Typically chipsets are tuned to the specific processor being used, so while everything looks fine right now in 32-bit mode, 64-bit operation could be vastly different and lead to stability problems.

In a nutshell, if things work well now, don't tamper with it.

well everything is running fine, im just reinstalling my OS on it on a fresh start just to clear things out then maybe ill revert it back to W7 but also now i have another question which i dont think i should have another thread for but does anyone know if they make a 9 Pin Serial PCI/e card? my desktop doesnt have that and now i have nothing to hook up my RIB box to anymore unless i spend more money on buying an older type laptop then use that but no point if i can find a PCI card to plug in and use it from there.

Any leads or know what im talking about?
