• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have multiple XPR 6550 radios and XPR 6350 Radios that came as part of a larger auction which have codeplug passwords.

For the 6550s with old firmware, I was able to use Wireshark to do some packet sniffing and detect the passwords in order to unlock them. But that only works on the older firmare before R01.12.11. So I still have a few on this version.

For the 6350s, I can't really tell the firmware easily unless i sort through packets with wireshark. The first few I checked were all MORE RECENT than R01.12.11, So out of luck there.

I scoured the forums, and found a few relevant threads. This one seems to be the most thorough and vetted:

It suggests doing a recovery, and I DO have the most recent firmware version which I downloaded (last week) directly from my https://customerhub.motorolasolutions.com/ account.

When I launch CPS (16 build 823.... do I NEED 828???), and try to recover I get this screen and I have no options other that the firmware and codeplug I have selected in the screenshot:

So great! But then I clock OK, and press "YES" on the warning to continue about the retuning... it thinks for a few seconds and I get this error:

Capture.PNG

Now crucially - right before this, I hear the windows "unplug a usb" sound that plays if you unplug the motorola programming cable. The USB connection is now no longer present in windows either.
I suspect I know the answer to this, because when I do this in one of the xpr 6550s I see a similar message to this on the screen:

(SAMPLE - NOT ACTUAL SCREENSHOT)

And the behavior is identical (same CPS error code, same USB disconnect tone).

So for those of you who have recovered radios with firmware past R01.12.11.... where am I going wrong?

Update 1: I was able to install CPS 16 build 823 on an old laptop...for some reason the recover process was successful this time!
Side note: I previously had CPS 16 build 828 installed, but it was for the wrong reason. Not 100% sure how that happened. I uninstalled it and reinstalled 823...and the recovery worked for the 6350.

6550 recover seems to be running successfully now too..half way through!
One interesting difference - the "fresh" laptop has the MOTOTRBO Flashzap Driver installed.. my desktop does not!
