Quick question guys,
I've been scanning local frequencies for a little while now and would like to step up a notch. Can't fully wrap my head around the ins-and-outs of the TACN system and such, so my question is, if I want to scan things like THP, TWRA, or Cookeville PD, would I be able to scan with a Uniden BCT15X? The prices have been dropping and I'm thinking about buying one instead of another mobile radio or something else. If that wouldn't work, what are some other options?

Thanks in advance!

No to listen to the TACN system you will need a minimum of a P25 PHASE 1 scanner. Better would be depending on how you will use the scanner and what you want to listen to you might want a P25 PHASE 2 Uniden BCD325P2, BCD996P2, HP2, BCD436HP or BCD536HP. Whistler WS1080, WS1088, WS1095, or WS1098. Radioshack PRO-668.

Yes you definitely need an digital trunker that can do 700 MHz. Most comms are Phase 1, though there are some that are Phase 2.... THP is Phase 1 on the TG's you can hear. Their Phase 2 TG's are fully Encrypted.

I appreciate the responses. I've narrowed it down to the BCD996P2 or the BCD536HP. Anyone have anything to say about one over the other?

If you can afford it, get both. One can never have too many scanners, or electronics period. Till you need an substation just for your radio shack. Once your yard and roof look like an NSA listening post combined with the SETI project, you have almost enough antennas too.
