I'm pretty sure that the very first part of each of those pages is about as "lay" as can be, but I'm open to your suggestions for edits.

Can anyone in lay terms explain what Differs a Start up Key as opposed to a quick key ?.

In the most basic terms, a Start Up Key is used in conjunction with powering up the radio to tell the unit which pre-configured favorite lists you want to be powered up with the unit.

Quick keys, (other the other hand), are used while the radio is already turned on and scanning to "quickly" turn on or off favorites lists or departments or sites.

That's the basic idea, although there may be some variations, particularly with the use of Quick Keys.

I hope that gives you some idea.

With regard to the 436/536 units, these are the most sophisticated scanners ever developed, and I might agree that the manuals which accompany the units can be at times difficult to follow or lacking in details. Trial and error is the best way to learn about your radio, along with reading as many of the threads that you can here in the forums.

(One question that would be more uncomfortable to answer, although there ARE some legitimate answers, is why some posts here in the forums elicit such visceral responses from some of the folks here. Those answers will also be revealed to you by reading certain posts here in the forums.)

Not getting it....

K call me thick but I just cant wrap my head around it.......I think I get the Quick key thing as an ability to lock systems in or out at your discretion but not so sure about the whole start up thing.....Should I think of it like a Configuration thing ?......Like as an example say use Start up Key one as all my Ontario ****...and startup key to as like all my USA crap?.......If somebody could give me an example of how and when they would use use start up and quick keys it would be of tremendous benefit....Thanks in advance amigos.....

Start Up keys enable certain systems at start up. Say you want to turn the scanner on and listen to fire only you would press that start up key while powering on the scanner.

Quick keys enable/disable systems or groups when the scanner is already scanning.

Personally I have never used startup keys. I just turn my scanner on and use the quick keys to control what I want to listen to.

That's one way you might use it. Here is another example: (hypothetical)

I live in State X but have relatives in State Y. They are far distant, and I don't want to have to load all the State X FLs while I'm in State Y (and vice versa), so I assign each different Start-Up Keys so the ones are not loaded while I would never be able to use them. When in State X, I use Start-Up Key 1, and when I go to State Y, I use Start-Up Key 2.

BTW, if you don't specify a Start-Up Key, it will load the last one used, so I only have to enter the Start-Up Key when I change from X to Y, or Y to X.

Better?

It's also worth noting that the Start Up Key feature isn't something that has to be programmed. It's an option that some users find helpful for the situations described above.

While I have a pretty decent grashp on how this feature works, I do not use it because it adds another layer of things to remember. Everything I need to turn on/off is either by Quick Key or GPS.
