Adapted from the NASWA Notes column in the October NASWA Journal by Rich D'Angelo;

From Robert Kipp we learn that Radio St.Helena Day (RSD) 2009 will be on Saturday 14 November with the following schedule for this year's Party On the Air (all times are UTC);

  • 2000-2100 to India/SE Asia
  • 2100-2200 to Japan/Asia
  • 2200-2330 to Europe
  • 2330-0100 to North/Central America/Caribbean

All transmissions will be on 11092.5 USB. There is a newly designed RSD 2009 QSL ard sponsored by the Japan SW Club. To get a QSL from Radio St.Helena, you must send a written and verifiable reception report by airmail and include sufficient return postage. Email reports will not be verified and recordings will not be returned. In Euro countries, include 5 Euros; for others 3 US Dollars will be required to cover the postage costs. Reports should be sent to Radio St. Helena, P.O. Box 93, Jamestown St Helena STHL 1ZZ South Atlantic Ocean (via United Kingdom and Ascension). EMails and phone calls from DXers everywhere are very welcome during the broadcasts. A special email address for RSD 2009 will, probably, be announced in October (n.b. nothing announced yet, as far as I know...jjz). Robert notes "Gary Walters and his team at Radio St. Helena wish everyone excellent listening conditions, hope that you enjoy the programming and that the sunspots will be kinder to us this year"

Unfortunately this station continues using really bad transmission times to the Americas - the East will be in full darkness, which is going to make hearing it difficult. Best to try for the earlier transmissions.

QSLs can be very slow to come from St.Helena, as many DXers have reported. As I understand it, supply and mail ships stop at St.Helena only a couple of times a year. They do come eventually though.

Good luck to everyone who tries for this one! Remember it only happens once a year. 73 Mike

Thank you for the info!
Last year, while listening to the broadcast, Radio St. Helena came in a lot stronger while it was being beamed toward Europe here in the Midwest USA. When it was scheduled to switch to the North/Central America direction there was a noticeable drop in the signal. So as you stated, listening to an earlier transmission is not a bad idea.
Good luck to all!

Via the NASWA Yahoo group and Rich d'Angelo - the correct email address for contacting the staff during RSD is:

radio.announcements4669(at)msn.com

note: everything MUST be in lower case! (No I don't know why - however it was spotted by one of the staff at RSH)

I emailed them once a few years ago and it was cool hearing my message read on the air. I wish I could get some ham activity from there!

Heard them during the 2000 hour to India/SE, albeit, not real well. Had a het bugging them. But could tell it was in English and heard some music I knew. Went to basement to do some painting and will try again after while.

Same here now. I really didn't get a chance to check during the 2100-2200 slot. Think the first hour was my best shot here. Hopefully someone got them ok. Now that the path to the east coast is getting into total darkness, not sure we will get much from them now. However, you may still have a chance yet. Keep an ear open out your way and good luck.

Nothing heard here except static. :(

Still nothing at the designated switch to NA. I am hearing fax on 11089 USB. That's about it. I'll leave it on for a while.

Although I first thought it would be fruitless, I listened at sign on. I was able to copy enough, I believe, to be verified by the staff. I had the four hours devoted to the station but, unfortunately, the signal ended up getting buried in the horrific noise level that seemed to develope as the xmission continued. Sign on turned out to be the only copy I could manage.

Written report set to go, now the 6-10 month wait to see if I qualified!!
