Hi,

I am about to purchase an ICOM R2500 from a dealer in Hong Kong and hopefully not end up with the slot for UT-122 missing as happened to some of the members of this forum.

I checked with the dealer and he has the Version #18 EXP 1 or version #20 and is not sure whether they have the slot for UT 122 in them or not.

Would anyone be aware of the versions 18 or 20 and what region /country they are meant or or if they have or do not have the slot for UT-122 decoder?

Thanks

Thanks

Hopefully? I would make absolutely sure before purchasing! One dealer on eBay is selling the Japanese version, and it will not accept the UT-122 option. Another dealer is selling the Government Only version, restricted in the U.S. for us normal hobbyist consumers. That version will accept the UT-122 module. Send the seller a message clearly asking him before spending that amount of money, and not getting what you want!

I should note that technically it is illegal to purchase the Government restricted version, if you do not meet the requirements. Just an FYI, not a lecture.

Interesting! I wonder how many version there are?

The U.S. version is a R2500-05
The Government Restricted version is a R2500-10

This does not surprise me. Icom seems to bask in strange and convoluted marketing. They do not support their software much at all and do not allow third party companies to offer improved (or better) software solutions.
The PCR2500 is a super radio, but has been handcuffed in its performance by just dumb frequency limitations, P25 module limitations and sub receiver limits. Firmware version 1-18, where are they on Icom's website?
Icom if you are reading this, please allow third party vendors the tools (source code) they need to unleash the full potential of the PCR2500. Just my $.02

versions

There are about 7-8 versions that I know of, amongst them are

1. Asia - all frequencies unlocked with UT-122 #18
2. Japan - all freq unlocked without UT122 #01
3 Asia - unknown verision #22

and two more for US and three for Europe

Where are these firmware updates. Icom Japan?

Hi VInce,

These are not firmware upgrades but hardware version numbers used by ICOM to identify units meant for different countries/regions of the world.
