Found a simple way to get improve on the nasal sound on the R7:
Flip open the rubber speaker and power caps, and twist 90 degrees to keep them open. This makes the audio sound a bit more natural, like the speaker is actually inside an enclosure, rather than being inside an airtight box.
Discovered this by accident since I always had the caps closed when monitoring.
This is a subtle fidelity change, so I found it very useful for medium to strong strength airband comms - something loud enough to actually move the speaker.
My personal settings for airband eq is:
AF OFF
Treble CUT
Bass CUT
Of course an external speaker like the MFJ 981 does fine, but man, I'd easily give up some battery life for a bit more audio power. Oh well. Maybe an R7-D ? C'mon Icom, you really have a nice scanner here that needs only one major improvement. Ok - two: drop the icons for more screen space for larger fonts - even the large font option isn't large enough.
