Well it's kinda late in the season now to get new frequencies. But some of those frequencies havn't changed in 10 years, like Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett etc.....most teams it seems keep the same frequenices year to year, the only thing you gotta figure out it if they are on Ch1 or Ch2.....I get Racing Electronics to clone my scanner for me. They charge $10 a year now to get it done. But they will clone it as many times as you want so you can get it done for Trucks & Busch then change to Nextel........anyway good luck. I'm not sure there are any updated lists on the internet that are going to be accurate since some of the teams change on race weekend.

It means NASCAR basically sold out to Nextel. Nextel took over the title sponsorship and the behind-the-scenes rumors are Nextel wants to shut out all radios (scanners) except their own. My problem with it so far is I can use my scanner for basically free but Nextel is charging between $5-$10 per race for the same access/feeds.

I knew about the FanScan, but didn't know that they are talking about not
letting us use scanners at the track. That's BS!

Uniden has a deal with Nascar to produce Nascar branded scanners so I do not think they will stop the use of scanners anytime soon.

I think the Nextel-only policy is long term and definitely won't happen anytime soon. The last thing I heard that I believe was that NASCAR is buying Action and trying to find a way to take control from Racing Electronics. Now that they've got the merchandising in their pockets your radio is next.

Nextel wants to replace all team radio communications with Nextel PTT service. They will set up a portable Nextel system and take it to each race. Since all team communicatins are now over a "wireless telephone" service it will be illegal to monitor the team communications with a monitor radio. Not to mention the fact that the signals are digital and encrypted. You will have to subscribe to nextel and "pay per view" to hear the team you want to listen to.

It is being "sold" to the teams as a security measure. The other teams will no longer be able to monitor your team radio to learn your race plan and the changes to it as the race progresses.

It is part of the plan to enhance the profits for the new series sponser. May not be this year. May not be next year. Unless something drastic happens in the nascar world it will happen.

When did you hear this? Last time I heard, Nextel said they weren't gonna make scanners obsolete for us race fans.

Talking to some nascar team members who themselves race SCCA/NASA events. The subject got around to how some club racing teams are using Cell phones for car to pit comunications because of the unlimited weekend airtime plans are more cost effective than investing in radio equipment and the hassle of liscensing. They mentioned how Nextel was "suggesting" the teams would be better off with their service. When the title sponser of your series suggest their product would be good for you to use, you end up getting to use it if you want to or not. Money talks.................

Yes I know rumor and speculation.

It would be a real shame if they encrypted thier radios or switched to a system the fan would not be able to monitor. Listening to the drivers at the track had become a huge business for companies like Racing Electronics and Racing Radios among others. Scanners have become part of the entire "fan experience". But someday it'll probably happen.

Cup series will never switch over to Nextel or any service for car/crew communitions. It would alienate millions (yes millions) of the race fans who put out good money to see these races. There are probably more race fans with scanners than there are hobbyists. I guarantee you that there are at the least several thousand if not tens of thousands of race fans who enjoy enhancing their race experience with a scanner at each race. For Nextel to take that aspect away would be ludicrous. The old adage "Don't bite that hand that feeds you." would apply to that situation perfectly. Race teams have been using two way radio for many years now, obviously trying to keep other teams from listening in is of no concern. They know the fans are listening in and they sure don't mind that at all. To think Nextel would force (perhaps encourage is a better word) teams to switch to Nextel services is just not going to happen. It would errode the fan base faster than a Jeff Gordon qualifiying lap!

NexTel is NOT a wireless telephone service. They are not subject to the same conditions as Cellular. They are more equal to a trunked radio system that happens to have interconnect abilities.

The fact that the protocol used (IDEN) is proprietary makes it not able to be added to scanners without permission of the format owner.

Radioscan, I agree that at least for the time being NASCAR will not take the ability ot monitor teams away from the fans. It has become big business and a majority of the fans listen in to thier favorite driver. I have been taking a scanner to the races for about 12 years now and it started several years before that.

But I can asssure you the race teams would ALL be on 800mhz with encrypted radios if NASCAR would allow them, Lord knows each team has the money to make it to where no one else could listen in. But NASCAR also listens in and I suppose likes the ability to monitor each team and find out what they are saying. But if you read Nextel Cup Scene, several issues back there was an article about TV broadcasting the scanner traffic and how other teams "eavesdrop" on other teams to find out what they are doing during practice. Bascially the teams were griping about everyone listening in on thier transmissions. So I can assure you no team is happy about all these people listening in. They would all switch to encrpted radio's if NASCAR would let them !!!!!
