For 60 bucks, come down here to Elkhorn and I will drill a 3/4" hole in your truck!

I've got three in mine, best way to go.

Yeah, really :)

If it comes to it, I'm sure that a couple of us that have experience with installing these could help you out. I always like watching holes be put in other people's cars.

Inquiry - Our vehicles in the Chaplain Responder fleet are all Ford Crown Vic's with the aluminum trunk lids and these are easy to mount things to... However, regarding the GM product that you are working on getting the MNO mount attached to the roof: doesn't GM have a DOUBLE thickness roof ? If so, you had better get the headliner out of the way and see where those anti-flex and reinforcing bars are positioned as Stateboy mentioned, BEFORE you drill.

GM spend money on something like sheetmetal? Ha! The roof is single layer non-galzanized steel. A standard NMO mount is a non-issue.

FYI, the trunklid on CV's are steel. I think they tried aluminum one year back in the late 90's and ran into issues with antenna's not tuning or a crappy ground etc...but since then they have been steel.

Thanks guys, all this info is great and very helpful. I planned on pulling the head liner down this weekend just to see my options for wire runs and will make sure I take a look at what the roof looks like where I plan on getting the mount done. And thanks Stateboy for the dimensions, that is pretty helpful.

My brother has to check but he thinks the shop he used to work in has one of the motorola hole saws and they may be able to do it for me but he wasn't sure. If not I will probably go to General Communications in Tosa. They told me their costs are $60/hr but if the hole only takes 30min then it will only be $30 plus I talked with a guy at AES yesterday that said he had his van done there and they were a good shop to deal with. So once I get back from my vacation in 2 weeks I will go and get the hole put in and then get the antenna mounted. Thanks again for all the help, always great to find helpful people!! :)

Also just an FYI - we have two 1997 CV's, a 2001 and a 2002 in our responder group - mag mounts do not 'stick' to any of these truck lids... just assuming that they are aluminum... mag mounts work properly on the roof, but not the trunk. Several years ago, a friend of the family had a part time job driving a taxi - it was also a 2002 CV and I know that one had a steel deck lid because he had a CB mag mount on it... possibly a part difference between civilian and fleet versions? Uncle had a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis and a mag CB wouldn't stick to that deck either. Oh, well...

The civie cars must have aluminum decklids then, but the CVPI's have steel decklids and I have the 3/4" slugs to prove it :)

Wierd things that car makers do...maybe that's why the civie CV performs better than the CVPI.

I just contacted a buddy at a Ford garage about 40 minutes from our Rectory - he said that for 'a time' (his words) that the civie versions in the LX SPORT trim package had the aluminum trunk AND hood to save about 135 pounds and to add to performance. They also had a 9 inch 3:27 rear end while the regular civies and fleet versions had the 2:73 axle for better fuel economy and a higher top speed for the LE versions (not the taxis - those had a computer limiter set to 100 while the LE versions were set to 129) . Those models were made at either Oakville, Ontario or in St. Louis - he wasn't sure... very helpful info. All I know is that when I push the go pedal on my LX, it barks.

Now, back to Mr. Schmit's situation -

Make sure that there is no paint next to the underside of the 3/4 inch hole so the part of the NMO mount that rests in that area picks up a proper body ground. I have roughed up that area in the past using the edge of a small metal file and did the same thing to the flange part of the NMO mount. This give a little more 'grab' to the two surfaces and keeps it from slipping while you are securing the big circular nut from the top.

They do vehicle installs? I was looking at their web site and it didn't say anything about that. I will have to call them, they are very close to where I live. Thanks!!

I forgot about Viking...I know one of the guys over there. Nice enough, but I have no opinion on install abilities, as I've never seen one.
