>Elizabethtown PD is going P-25...
>Harlan County's Interop is going to be a digital trunked system (I am not misreading the paper)...
the way I read the document, it looks like they will keep the 450/460 meg range, and the system will
be capable of supporting 400 units... The radios are supposed to be Analog/Digital 6.25 mHz (sounds like NXDN to me!)
They have used the dreaded E-word....
>Todd County is working on a Trunked system for their first responders....
>Ballard SO is adding a repeater to increase coverage in the southern part of the county, adding VHF radios to all SO crusiers to allow interop...
>Allen County Sheriff is buying NXDN gear for all deputies....

N/P Steve. And yes, I hope they are watching too. NXDN systems seem to be popping up everywhere, and with no way to monitor them, the good ole scanning days may just come to an abrupt halt if no one can get access to NXDN technology to make a scanner to monitor it.

As far as the Todd County possibility, there are good and bad sides to it. Good side being there are local LTR trunked systems in place to piggy-back off of (Logan County for public safety, and Palco has a system that is oft used by some law enforcement in Logan and Franklin counties). Bad side being they may link up with Christian in their NXDN system. That would make them unhearable for a good while.

Talked with someone this morning about Todd County. Reply was "What do they need it for?" They can't afford a trunked system, and coverage from another would be a problem as well. And even then, they don't use the channels they got enough to warrant a trunked system. I think this might just be nothing but a rumor. But I will do some more checking as the week progresses.

Hmm - before I saw that last item, I thought they were going to be narrowbanded - which complies with the federal mandate for spacing in the UHF band after 2011. Just because the spacing is 6.25 khz doesn't make it NXDN automatically, does it? Just curious

The 6.25 compliance doesn't mean, necessarily, that this will be a NXDN system.... BUT, since the good folks of The Kentucky Wireless Interoperability Executive Committee removed P-25 as the approved digital protocol there has a spread of NXDN systems across the state....AND the Kenwood sales brochure sounds a lot like the proposal:

Kenwood is pleased to introduce NEXEDGE™ conventional and trunking technology featuring 6.25 kHz digital narrowband operation. NEXEDGE™ was designed to provide advanced communication solutions that meet the needs of private enterprise and public sectors today and in the future. NEXEDGE™ includes features such as FM Analog @ 25 and 12.5 kHz channels, NXDN™ digital @ 12.5 and 6.25 kHz channels, compliance with current frequency assignments, and NEXEDGE™ will easily convert to very narrow bandwidths in the future.
The most salient selling point, however, has nothing to do with technology nor compliance nor, in my opinion, interoperability; rather it has to do with, "The scanner heads can't hear us now!"

There is a running thread concerning NXDN Systems in Kentucky....

If it is propritary to Kenwood, then it would have to be licensed, the DSP would need to be able to decode it, and more than just Kentucky would need to use it. I don't think you would see it on a scanner.

Actually, some ICOM radios use, it is trying to be a newer alternative standard.
NXDN is a Common Air Interface (CAI) technical standard for mobile communications. It was developed jointly by Icom Incorporated and Kenwood Corporation. The NXDN Forum was formed in order to promote the NXDN protocol in North and South America. The forum's members are:
* Aeroflex Wichita Inc.
* Daniels Electronics Ltd.
* Icom Incorporated
* Kenwood Corporation
* Ritron Inc.
* Trident Microsystems

Chances are good it will become much bigger around the Country.

I think what Steve is referring to is now that there is a new proprietary system out there, some of these scanner manufacturers need to keep eyes and ears open to get a license to introduce a NXDN monitoring capable scanner. NXDN systems are being talked about a lot as of late and there is no way to monitor them. We know it would have to be licensed. Just my $0.02.

Rumor update for western ky

>Todd County is working on a Trunked system for their first responders....

Apparently, several counties here in Western Kentucky may go Kenwood Nexedge. Scuttlebutt is that Todd, Hopkins, Butler and even McLean counties have meetings to discuss the possibilities of going Nexedge. Even heard that Logan may switch all their stuff over to a Nexedge system.

Seems the idea is to get the entire area on Nexedge. I'll post more as I catch more info about it.
