Hi all, this is my first post to the forums. I've been out of the scanning game for years now and just purchased a GRE PSR-410 since I live in Williamson, NY and everything is still analog. Probably going to be upgrading to a digital, probably a PSR-800 soon, since I'll be able to pick up neighboring Monroe county with my roof mounted discone when I finally get it up. Enough about me, here is my question: First, I apologize if this topic has been discussed ad nauseum, but what do you expect from a noob...? I just bought the Radio Shack Scanner Programming USB cable 20-546 and the software asks what scanner model I have and won't run without inputting a model. Obviously the GRE is not listed. DO I have to hack the software, or is there a perfectly compatible Radio Shack model that I can input to use with my 410? Sorry for the long-windedness and thank you very much for your replies!

Scott,

The 20-546 cable will work just fine with the PSR-410 without the little pigtail 'stereo to mono' adapter that comes with it. Make sure you have the latest FTDI drivers installed for it, you can find them here (forget about the ones on the CD, they're already outdated):

Virtual COM Port Drivers

As far as software, I believe the CD that came with the cable is older than the PSR-410 has been around, so you're not going to find the software for it on there.

You have three choices of software for the PSR-410:

Win500 ($35) - Win500: PSR-500, PSR-600, PRO-106, PRO-197, PSR-310, PSR-410 Scanner Software for Data Management, Monitoring, and Control

PSREdit310 ($25) - PSREdit310 - Configuration Editor for the PSR-310 and PSR-410 Scanners

ARC-310 ($30) - GRE GRECOM RadioShack PSR-310 PSR-410 GRE310 GRE410 GRE-310 GRE-410 PSR310 PSR410 Software

You can download and test drive all three for 30 days before spending any money. Personally, I use Win500 with my PSR-410 because I do a lot of logging/recording and it works well. PSREdit310 is excellent software also. ARC-310 is my least favorite.

Give them all a spin and see which you like the best.

Just remember to throw the CD out, it's useless at this point. Get the latest drivers from FTDI's site, then go directly to each software's site to get the very latest versions.

Good luck!
