Radio shack pro-2096 question. Hi everyone i just bought a radio shack pro-2096 scanner on eBay. The scanner is omitting a strange odor and when I programmed the scanner when it stops on the frequency all I hear is static. Any idea what is wrong.

Strange odor could mean electrolytic capacitors leaked, and may result in receive degradation depending on which ones failed… i’ve had a PRO-26 that started to smell a bit like sulfur or rotten fish… capacitors were all way past their expected life.
Okay thanks, I contacted the seller on eBay and he said there was nothing wrong with the scanner. I have owned scanners in the past and never had one smelled like this and thanks again for the help.

i had an old bc145 give out a little smoke, and that got unplugged and is in the scanner graveyard.
that is the section of the entertainment center with old electronics. hard drives, zaxxon computer board, freq counter, crystal scanner.
just for show, not for use.

Does it have positive going to the center pin of the power connector? What is the DC output voltage?
Smoker smell?
How do the buttons all look? Are they tan or even brown? Tan means a smoker, brown means a heavy smoker.
Just another example why not to smoke!
All GRE/RS/Whistlers 96/2096/206/197/651/652/1040/1065's are like this BTW.

open it and take a clear picture of it, could just be the smoker's smell which can vent out if you leave the case open for several days.
I bought one just like it, smelly locally from craigslist for $35.00 and eventually the smell went away after leaving it open for a week outdoors

Is that a typo? Do you mean Morrisville? Is that PA or NC? What frequencies? If you are not at the same location as the seller, you will need to reprogram the scanner. Frequencies and systems will be different.

Morrisville,vt and I did reprogram the scanner and it still doesn’t work
