I have had a radio shack pro-652 for many years and a lot of the frequencies have gone to the marcs system. Can this scanner be programmed to receive marcs? If so how? I want to receive all Lawrence County Ohio police, fire, ems, and Ohio state highway patrol post 44.

Yes, it can be programmed to receive MARCS. I use Butel ARC500 also. ARC500 Basic is all you need to program the scanner. The Pro version adds additional features such as logging. Do you have the programming cable?

We haven't heard from you. I have an ARC500 file for Lawrence County with everything you want to monitor. Another software option is PSREdit500. I would stay away from Win500. A number of members have had problems receiving the keys after paying for them. The ARC500 file can easily be imported into the PSREdit500 software. It's up to you to determine which one you like best. Both ARC500 and PSREdit500 are well supported. If you have the programming cable and software, I can attach the file and get you into business immediately. I have ARC500, Win500, and PSREdit500.

I am going to purchase the software and cable, I have been researching before I buy and this forum has been very helpful! And thank you for your offer! My first scanner used crystals, lol, so I’m trying to educate myself.

You will need to install a driver for the cable. I have found that once you see what is entered in the software that it makes it a lot easier to understand how to do it yourself. Here is the programming file for Lawrence County. Save the attached zipped file to your computer and extract. Connect your scanner to the computer with the programming cable. The cable plugs into the PC/IF jack on the scanner. Open the extracted file with ARC500. Go to the Scanner tab and Upload to Scanner. The file is setup so that you can select which of the 5 sites for the MARCS system in Lawrence County you want to scan by turning the scan lists on and off. The Coal Grove site in scan list 2 should be the closest. Scan list 6 has the conventional frequencies.
SCAN LISTS:
1. LawCo Crown City
2. LawCo Coal Grove
3. LawCo Huntington
4. LawCo Oak Hill
5. LawCo S Webster
6. LawCo Conventnl

Help! I own the Radio Shack Pro-652 & am clueless regarding the programming. I need help w/ entering talk group and/or manual input of frequencies. How do you program the scanner for trunking? It says nothing in the manual. In fact, after attempting to read the manual I'm more confused than ever. I've tried YouTube via Whistler 1065 w/ no help. Can anyone provide guidance? Much appreciated. Dave in Land O' Lakes, FL

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. First of all, the new Pasco County P25 trunked system is Phase 2 which your scanner cannot decode. Secondly, except for Fire/EMS Dispatch, all talkgroups are fully encrypted. No scanner can receive encrypted transmissions. Mode T = TDMA = P25 Phase 2. Mode TE = Fully Encrypted. Here is a link to the new trunked system: Pasco County (P25) Some of the conventional frequencies may remain in use. Here is a link to the conventional frequencies: Pasco County [Tampa-St. Petersburg] The scanner can be used for other applications such as railroads, aircraft, amateur radio, public works, and some businesses.

Thank you for your quick response. FYI: Pasco uses ECACS for its trunking. Does that make a difference? What about Hillsborough County or any of the surrounding counties. Are they all encrypted?

EDACS systems are no longer supported by the manufacturer. The EDACS system in your county will be going away. Hillsborough County is also transitioning from an EDACS system to a new P25 Phase 2 system. Hillsborough County (P25) So far, the dispatch talkgroups for the sheriff are showing open on the new Hillsborough County P25 system but are Phase 2. Fire is also showing open with a combination of Phase 1 and Phase 2 talkgroups. Talkgroups with Mode D are Phase 1 which your scanner can receive. Mode DE would be Phase 1 encrypted. The Phase 1 talkgroups could change to Phase 2 at any time. If you look at the threads in the Florida forum, you will find more information.

Also, if you can point me in the right direction for assistance in programming this scanner that would be great. Am willing to compensate.

I have a Radio Shack PRO-197 which is the older brother of your scanner. It was manufactured by GRE for Radio Shack. When Whistler bought the rights from GRE, they used the same design to build the scanner for Radio Shack and it was renamed the PRO-652. It has been years since I programmed that scanner manually. Using software is so much faster and easier. You can also share programming files right here in the forums. Basically, here is what you have to do. You have to create an EDACS Standard trunked system. You have to add a site to that system. The frequencies that go into the site must be in the same order as those listed in the database (Frequencies for Motorola and P25 systems can be in any order). To the left of each frequency, you will see a 2-digit number. That is known as the LCN or Logical Channel Number.
001 (1)Simulcast01 855.812502 856.8375c03 857.837504 858.8375c05 859.837506 858.387507 855.22508 856.225
Next, you can start entering the talkgroup ID's and alpha tags for the system. Each talkgroup needs to be assigned to a scan list (1 thru 20). You group similar talkgroups in the same scan list. For example: Scan list 1 is Fire, scan list 2 is Law, and scan list 3 is Public Works. You can arrange the scan lists any way you like. You can group conventional frequencies in scan lists in a similar manner. I suggest that you ask for help programming your scanner in the Florida forum. You may find someone nearby willing to do it.

Thank you for your response. That's just it: I can't find anyone to help me program. The manual is very ambiguous & I end up not doing it correctly. Technology is just passing me by

If you had programming software and the programming cable, I could help to get the scanner working. I use Butel ARC500 Basic software. You will still be able to use the 652 for other purposes such as aircraft, railroads, VHF marine band, and some businesses after Pasco and Hillsborough Counties move to the P25 Phase 2 systems.
