This is the USB cable that downloads the driver which will allow you to download the software. The software is at the website via ae-creative. I'm afraid I don't understand what I'm doing or what I'm not doing.

The cable does not download the driver. A cable driver needs to be installed to transfer the programming file from the ARC500 software to the scanner. The software can be downloaded and installed without a cable. There is a generic cable driver installer included in the ARC500 software. Is it an AEcreative cable that you have? Once the software is installed, I will give you instructions how to install the cable driver.
