I have an old BC245XLT that has served my hand held scanner needs for 20 years or so. I'm going to an air show this September in Fort Worth, TX. As you probably know this scanner does not have the military air band. So I started investigating more modern scanners for me to upgrade to. Of course RadioReference was one of the first places I looked. While poking around I noticed that there were some people getting real good deals from Radio Shack stores that were closing. So I started calling around to all the Albuquerque stores. I didn’t have a whole lot of luck. Ready to give up I called the last store on my list. It was the store at I-40 and Coors. Lo and behold they had a PRO-668 marked down to $150 from $499 (MSRP). WOW, what a steal. I've been playing around with it for a couple of days now and I'm very impressed.

While I was there I picked up a 4 pack of Radio Shack branded NiMh AA cells. I'm not sure if these are any good but at 80 percent off (less than $1 per cell) I figured I'd check them out.

Nice. I only ran across analog scanners which at the stores I had gone to in other areas didn't have a decent mark down and closed with same price for older analog models. It was kind of dissapointment.

I've heard of that same deal at stores that were closing. Was that one of the stores that is closing and clearing everything out or just a regular sale?

It was one of the stores that was closing and clearing everything out. I went back a few days later to buy some more of the NiMh batteries and noticed they marked down the PRO-668 AGAIN to just $99. I bought two more. One for a friend and a spare for myself. At that price I couldn’t resist.

BTW it was the store on Coors just north of I40. I doubt they have any more but you could try.

I saved some legwork and called around to all of the stores in town. Took me about 30 minutes. I got lucky at the last one. :)

For $99 dollars, I guess the keypad less radio would be justified at least for scoping out near field transmissions...

Oh its good for a lot more than that. Having the entire US and Canada RR database at your fingertips is very handy. It makes you think a whole lot different from a keypad radio that's for sure. But once you get that behind you it is a super powerful scanner.

It's a much more reliable radio than the x36 Uniden flagship radios. I would not buy another one of them for $99. After a year mine is unusable. Screen too dim to see. So I guess it depends on your opinion of what is out there.
